Summary

Job Summary

The office of the Chief Platform and Technology Officer (CPTO) is seeking the most highly skilled, experienced, creative, and productive Software Engineers with breadth and depth in both ONTAP and other storage systems. From cutting-edge storage and data management, to replication and HA technologies, to SAN/block, operating system, distributed systems, and computer science fundamentals, the successful candidate will have a deep background in advanced computer science and a willingness to jump into any code path.

This team will do forward-looking research and investigations, develop proofs-of-concept, and drive some projects to MVP, often in tight partnership with mainstream engineering teams. You will play a pivotal role by both rolling up your sleeves to design and develop what comes next for NetApp as well as running projects, collaborating with engineers across ONTAP, and mentoring others inside and outside of the group.

Just as important as the skills and knowledge, however, will be attitude. The successful candidate will demonstrate a growth mindset for themselves, their team, and NetApp. They will possess an insatiable curiosity, persistent open-mindedness, balance optimism and realism, and be relentless in their pursuits. Be bold in your ideas, grounded in your approach, make smart investments, knowing that some will fail-fast but others will drive the company forward.

Job Requirements

Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and development of new features and approaches to storage for ONTAP and all NetApp's storage systems
  • Analyze existing systems and code paths, see patterns across and opportunities within to drive strategic initiatives
  • Articulate tradeoffs for dynamism, flexibility, performance, efficiency and scalability
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code. Conduct code reviews and provide feedback to team members
  • Understand the engineering that has gone into the systems we have today, and be able to re-evaluate and evolve that logic into next-generation ideas, products, and features
  • Work closely in cross-functional and cross-BU teams, including hardware engineers, and product managers, to deliver ground-breaking intelligent storage solutions
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineers in our team and across the company, to help them see new paths forward and foster innovation in their own teams
  • Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks in designs with experience and simplified quantitative models, but also in code using deep analyses and critical reasoning
  • Stay updated with emerging technologies and industry trends, and use that knowledge to drive positive disruptive change
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders, presenting technical concepts and project progress
  • Work effectively with heterogenous data to assess feasibility and derive insights which inform requirements, design, and testing

Qualifications
  • Technical Skills
    • Highly skilled in C/C++, competent in Python, able to pick up new languages as necessary
    • Deep understanding of file systems, advanced data structures and algorithms, current and emerging workloads
    • Experience with performance analysis and optimization techniques
    • Familiarity with Unix/Linux operating systems and kernel development
    • Confident in using AI to accelerate all aspects of work
  • Soft Skills
    • Top notch problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically and creatively
    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
    • Thrive on progress when working independently or as part of a team
  • Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience with ONTAP or similar storage operating systems
    • Knowledge of distributed systems and network protocols
    • Familiarity with agile development methodologies

Education

  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field

  • Experience: 8+ years of experience in software development, with a focus on file systems or storage technologies

Compensation:
The target salary range for this position is $220,000-250,000. The salary offered will be determined by the candidate's location, qualifications, experience, and education and may be outside of this range. Final compensation packages are competitive and in line with industry standards, reflecting a variety of factors, and include a comprehensive benefits package. This may cover Health Insurance, Life Insurance, Retirement or Pension Plans, Paid Time Off (PTO), various Leave options, Performance-Based Incentives, employee stock purchase plan, and/or restricted stocks (RSU's), with all offerings subject to regional variations and governed by local laws, regulations, and company policies.
