Bill Rate: $90 - $96Contract Length: 12 Months (Possible Extension or Conversion)

Top Requirements:10+ years of SmallTalk development experience (must be recent or within the last few years)Ability to package and deploy SmallTalk applications in non-production environmentsStrong understanding of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) and design principlesStrong problem-solving, analytical skills, and attention to detailAbility to multi-task and quickly learn complex business logicExcellent communication skills (written and verbal)Engineering background must be active (not long gaps or shift to PM roles)Plusses / Nice to Have:Full-stack Java experience (especially backend)Experience with modernization efforts transitioning SmallTalk JavaExperience with React UIExperience supporting large enterprise legacy systemsAbility to help organize work, lead technically, and act as a senior team memberExperience supporting credit card servicing or call center applicationsJob Summary:The Specialty Software Engineer 4 will serve as a senior/lead engineer supporting legacy SmallTalk applications used for credit card servicing in enterprise call centers. The engineer will work on both maintenance and modernization initiatives, contributing to two-week Agile sprints while helping guide the team through complex technical challenges. The role includes enhancing SmallTalk applications, troubleshooting issues, deploying builds, onboarding modernization patterns, and supporting a multi-year initiative to migrate the platform to Java.
The engineer is expected to operate as a technical lead, assisting with project organization, mentoring team members, and providing deep legacy-system expertise while supporting long-term modernization toward cloud-ready Java solutions.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities: Develop and maintain business-critical
SmallTalk applications
Package and deploy SmallTalk builds into non-production environments
Support the modernization program transitioning legacy systems into
Java Work with team members in two-week Scrum sprints
Analyze production issues, identify root causes, and implement fixes
Collaborate with cross-functional partners across SmallTalk, Java, UI, and QA teams
Assist with backend Java development as needed
Learn and apply complex business rules related to credit card servicing
Follow engineering standards and contribute to documentation and design reviews
Serve as a senior technical contributor, helping organize work and guide best practices
