Job Summary
This role involves receiving, processing, and relaying information through multiple communication channels, including telephone, radio, and computer systems, while ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
Responsibilities include maintaining detailed logs, preparing reports, updating computer-based records, and monitoring security systems for potential issues. The position requires strong listening and communication skills to accurately capture and convey information, as well as the ability to read and interpret maps and location data. Telecommunicators must exercise sound judgment, particularly in emergency situations, and handle interactions with professionalism, clarity, and courtesy. Strong typing skills, computer literacy, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, mission-critical environment are essential for success in this role.
Minimum Qualifications
A. Must be high school graduates.
B. Demonstrate basic typing skills and computer literacy.
Job Description
Telecommunicators are among the “forward faces” of the Distribution Section and Water
Division. They interact with customers, the public, contractors, other city departments, county
agencies and state agencies. In performing their duties, they make judgements that have safety
and legal implications. Telecommunicators use several means of communication including radio,
telephone and desktop computers.
Specific Essential Duties:
A. Receive, respond and relay information received telephonically, via computer
messaging, and via radio communication.
B. Prepare reports, log inquiries and perform other administrative duties.
C. Possess a working knowledge of the names and locations of primary through fares within
the city of St. Louis.
D. Speak clearly over the telephone and radio.
E. Listen to obtain and accurately record detailed information from customers, Distribution
crews in the field, the public and others.
F. Exercise independent judgement in emergency situations.
G. Communicate tactfully and courteously with internal and external customers and
agencies.
H. Read and interpret maps and plats and convey mapping information verbally and in
writing.
I. Write clearly using correct grammar and punctuation.
J. Monitor security systems and act upon system breaches.
K. Update computer-based records.
L. Perform other unanticipated, mission-critical duties.
