About the role:
The Senior Applications Engineer provides advanced technical support, application development, integration, troubleshooting, and quality review for DDC/BMS/BAS control system projects. This role supports complex BAS network configuration, gateway integration, customer-facing technical discussions, portfolio standards, and issue resolution for active and existing sites.
This position requires mature judgment, technical depth, independent problem-solving, and the ability to mentor others while supporting consistent, high-quality department output. The Senior Applications Engineer also performs the core responsibilities of the Applications Engineer role while preparing for broader technical leadership responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Advanced Technical Application & Integration
- Troubleshoot and assist with BMS network setup, configuration, connectivity, and related system issues.
- Create gateway configurations used between Modbus and BACnet networks.
- Develop and support control system databases, interfaces, programming, and related deliverables for sequences of operation and project requirements.
- Provide customer-requested changes, updates, and enhancements to existing databases and application files.
- Support Service Teams with issues on existing sites and older projects, including technical investigation and resolution recommendations.
Technical Leadership & Quality Review
- Review standards across portfolios and help ensure consistent, high-quality output across assigned work.
- Attend and provide technical input as needed in customer-facing meetings.
- Support, coach, and guide Applications Engineers and Associate Application Engineers on technical tasks, documentation, and project workflows.
- Shadow and collaborate with the Lead Applications Engineer to learn direction, workflow management, and leadership practices.
Project Execution & Department Support
- Debug installation issues during static and dynamic start-up and commissioning of building controls and special systems.
- Provide input to sales staff as requested or required to assist in accurate estimation, design, installation, start-up, commissioning, and training for building systems.
- Communicate technical risks, missing information, status updates, and required decisions to appropriate stakeholders in a timely manner.
- Maintain organized project documentation, revisions, database support materials, and technical notes throughout the project lifecycle.
Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of commercial HVAC, building automation systems (BAS), DDC/BMS controls, and related control sequences.
- Ability to read and interpret project specifications, sequences of operation, drawings, equipment submittals, and controls documentation.
- Familiarity with BACnet and Modbus communication protocols and BAS network concepts.
- Clear understanding of computer and BAS networks, including device addressing, connectivity, and troubleshooting fundamentals.
- Strong analytical, technical problem-solving, communication, organization, and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced project environment while maintaining a high degree of integrity and accountability.
- Experience with Delta Controls preferred; experience with Reliable Controls, KMC, Siemens, or similar product lines is a plus.
- Experience with EPMS integration, MSA FieldServer Protonode, Python, JavaScript, or other line-based coding is a plus.
Experience
- 5+ years of experience programming BAS/DDC systems and integrating with third-party equipment preferred.
- Advanced troubleshooting experience with BAS networks, BACnet, Modbus, gateway configuration, commercial HVAC systems, and commissioning support preferred.
- Experience with mission-critical sites, data center environments, EPMS integration, Delta Controls, Reliable Controls, KMC, Siemens, or similar product lines strongly preferred.
