Summary:

  • Corporate Director, Cloud Enterprise Architecture is a leadership role responsible for defining, governing, and advancing the organization's enterprise-wide cloud strategy and cloud architecture within a complex, highly regulated healthcare environment. This role serves as the enterprise authority for cloud strategy, cloud adoption principles, multi-cloud architecture governance, and cloud financial management, accountable for building and owning the organization's first unified cloud architecture capability across clinical, operational, research, and administrative domains.
  • The Corporate Director defines and owns the organization's enterprise cloud strategy and governs the use of multiple cloud providers - including Microsoft Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud - within a principled, risk-managed, and financially governed multi-cloud architecture model.
  • This role leads the Cloud Enterprise Architecture team, provides guidance on cloud investment decisions and strategic cloud vendor relationships, and ensures cloud adoption is strategically coherent, financially accountable, architecturally sound, and compliant with HIPAA and applicable regulatory and audit requirements. In close partnership with the AI, Data, Cybersecurity, Application, and Infrastructure architecture leaders, and in close alignment with Finance, Legal, Compliance, Privacy, and Risk Management, the Corporate Director balances cloud adoption velocity with enterprise risk, cost governance, and organizational resilience, ensuring sustainable and accountable cloud adoption at scale.

Responsibilities:

  • Defines and owns the organization's first enterprise-wide Cloud Strategy, establishing a coherent, governed multi-cloud architecture model that aligns cloud adoption with organizational strategic priorities across clinical, research, and operations.
  • Builds, leads, and develops the Cloud Enterprise Architecture team, including direct reports Principal Enterprise, Domain and Solution architects
  • sets performance expectations, develops talent, and ensures organizational maturity and succession readiness.
  • Develops and executes a multi-year Enterprise Cloud Architecture and Strategy roadmap aligned to investment planning, organizational capabilities, and value realization targets.
  • Establishes enterprise cloud reference architectures, design standards, and adoption guardrails for Azure as the primary enterprise cloud platform, and governs the use of AWS and Google Cloud under defined architectural and compliance boundaries.
  • Owns enterprise cloud governance, including cloud architecture review processes, cloud standards enforcement, policy frameworks, and architectural decision records applicable across all organizational domains and entities.
  • Owns Cloud Financial Management (FinOps) strategy and governance, including enterprise cloud cost transparency, cost optimization frameworks, chargeback and showback models, budget governance, and cloud financial accountability reporting to senior leadership and Finance.
  • Ensures cloud architecture and cloud adoption comply with HIPAA, healthcare data privacy requirements, applicable regulatory and accreditation standards, and audit obligations
  • partners with Information Security, Privacy, Legal, Compliance, and Risk Management to establish and maintain cloud security and compliance architecture controls.
  • Partner with Security leaders to establish enterprise cloud security architecture standards, including identity and access management design, network segmentation, data residency and sovereignty controls, and enterprise-wide cloud security baseline requirements.
  • Partners with Enterprise AI Architecture leader to ensure cloud platform architecture supports enterprise AI and GenAI workloads, including GPU compute, AI platform infrastructure, and MLOps/LLMOps platform needs.
  • Partners with Data, Application, and Infrastructure architecture leaders to ensure cloud architecture standards support enterprise data platforms, clinical application hosting, research computing environments, and digital health delivery.
  • Provides advisory and architectural review authority over cloud-related vendor evaluations, cloud service provider negotiations, SaaS/PaaS/IaaS procurement decisions, and cloud investment proposals entering the enterprise portfolio.
  • Represents the Cloud Enterprise Architecture function in enterprise architecture review boards, technology investment governance committees, and executive steering forums
  • communicates cloud architecture strategy, risk posture, and value realization to senior executive leadership.
  • Define and manage the enterprise cloud ecosystem strategy, including strategic relationship with cloud service providers, and identify external collaboration opportunities that advance the enterprise cloud architecture program.
  • Defines cloud architecture KPIs, maturity metrics, and governance effectiveness measures
  • reports outcomes and risks transparently to executive leadership, Finance, and governance bodies.
  • Monitors emerging cloud technology trends, provider roadmaps, and regulatory developments
  • assesses strategic and architectural implications for the enterprise cloud strategy and adapts the roadmap accordingly.
  • Serves as an internal and external thought leader for enterprise cloud strategy and architecture in the healthcare and academic research sectors.
  • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization.

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree is required. Education Specialization:
    Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or related field.
  • 15+ years Information Technology experience, with 5+ years in Enterprise Architecture or Cloud Architecture leadership is required.
  • 3+ years Direct leadership of cloud strategy, cloud architecture, or cloud governance programs in enterprise or regulated environments is required.
  • 3+ years Direct people management experience, including leading architects or senior technical professionals is required.
