Database Administration Specialist (PostgreSQL Technical Lead)

• Location: Plano, TX or McLean, VA - Fully Onsite
• Assignment Type: Contract
• We are seeking a highly skilled Database Administration Specialist with advanced expertise in PostgreSQL and experience supporting enterprise-grade database environments. This role functions as a Technical Lead, driving database architecture, optimization, and migration strategies across complex systems. The ideal candidate combines deep technical capabilities with leadership experience, strong cloud knowledge, and the ability to guide best-in-class data practices.

About the Role

• As the Database Administration Specialist, you will design, implement, and support mission-critical PostgreSQL and MongoDB environments while contributing to modernization efforts and cloud-native database strategies. This role requires strong technical leadership, hands-on engineering skills, and the ability to collaborate across multiple engineering and product teams.

Key Responsibilities

PostgreSQL & MongoDB Architecture

• Design, implement, and optimize PostgreSQL and MongoDB databases for high performance and reliability.
• Utilize advanced knowledge of query planning, indexing, partitioning, and replication.
• Define and enforce best practices for database design, normalization, and data integrity.
• Deploy and manage clusters with high availability, disaster recovery, and global deployment configurations.
• Leverage AWS storage and monitoring tools to maintain system performance and resilience.
• Drive performance tuning and cost optimization across all database environments.

Database Administration & Optimization

• Perform ongoing performance tuning, query optimization, and resource allocation.
• Manage backup and recovery strategies to ensure data integrity and availability.
• Administer access controls, security policies, and compliance standards across database systems.

Migration Planning & Execution

• Lead full-lifecycle database migrations, including architecture planning, execution, and validation.
• Minimize downtime and ensure complete data fidelity during transitions.

Technical Leadership

• Mentor junior database engineers and serve as a technical SME for database-related initiatives.
• Work closely with engineering, application, and infrastructure teams to align strategies and solve complex technical challenges.
• Document standards, operational procedures, and architectural best practices.

Required Skills & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
• 8+ years of hands-on experience with PostgreSQL and MongoDB, including:
  • Query optimization
  • Indexing
  • Partitioning
  • High-availability configurations
• 2+ years in a technical leadership capacity.
• Proven experience designing, developing, and tuning databases for high-performance workloads.
• Extensive experience with AWS, including monitoring, global databases, and high-availability architectures.
• Familiarity with automation and IaC tools such as CloudFormation or Terraform.
• Strong troubleshooting skills, performance analysis, and database security expertise.
• Demonstrated success leading complex database migration initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional certifications in PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or AWS.
• Experience migrating legacy environments to cloud-native databases.
• Knowledge of broader AWS services (Lambda, EC2, S3) and their integration with data platforms.
• Experience implementing infrastructure automation and database-as-code practices.
