Role Overview
This position is for a Principal Engineer specializing in substation projects. The role involves performing engineering assignments ranging from limited scope to advanced projects requiring expertise in multiple disciplines. The engineer will manage projects, support RFP and diligence efforts, and ensure designs meet project specifications, safety standards, and performance goals with increasing independence. This position may be performed remotely for candidates with sufficient experience, with some travel required.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage all assigned substation projects for FERC 1000 RFPs and Early Stage Diligence Projects.
- Provide technical oversight of external engineers of record (EOR) to ensure compliance with project specifications, industry codes, and standards (IEEE, NESC, ASCE).
- Secure engineering consulting resources by developing scopes of work, securing bids, and awarding work through the supply chain group.
- Coordinate with project stakeholders to secure substation sites and obtain necessary permits and data.
- Manage orders for all long-lead major project materials to minimize budget and schedule risks.
- Collaborate with project engineering resources in various disciplines to determine project priorities and work plans.
- Ensure projects are implemented efficiently, cost-effectively, and safely in accordance with department procedures and policies.
- Support the legal team in regulatory filings, depositions, or hearings as required.
Required Qualifications
Education: A Bachelor of Science in Engineering is required. A degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil/Structural Engineering is preferred.
Experience: 11-15 years of experience leading engineering teams and providing oversight for major energy infrastructure projects. At least 7+ years of experience in the design and engineering of High Voltage substation projects is highly preferred.
Technical Skills: Advanced knowledge of engineering principles. Proficiency with computational tools such as ETAP or EDISON is beneficial. Experience with project engineering and/or project management is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineering (PE) certification or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
- Experience with High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems.
- Strong negotiation and stakeholder management skills.
Compensation & Benefits
Pay Rate: $50.00 - $60.62 per hour.
Work Environment
This role requires some travel within North America. Driving will be a required part of the position duties. Per Diem and Mob/De-Mob expenses are available for this assignment.
