Sr. Network Engineer

Description

We are looking for an experienced Sr. Network Engineer to join a contract opportunity with potential for a permanent role, supporting a life insurance organization in West Des Moines, Iowa. This role focuses on building and advancing enterprise and internet peering capabilities across a complex network environment, while shaping scalable standards for performance, security, and reliability. The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise with Cisco-based infrastructure, strong architectural judgment, and the ability to guide engineering teams through implementation and operational best practices.

Responsibilities:
Lead the architecture and rollout of advanced network peering solutions that support secure, resilient, and high-performing connectivity across the enterprise.
Design, implement, and maintain complex routing, switching, and transport environments spanning Layer 1, Layer 2, and Layer 3 network services.
Create technical standards, detailed diagrams, and supporting documentation for network, telephony, video, and connectivity solutions.
Evaluate network hardware, software platforms, and monitoring technologies, then coordinate adoption and deployment based on business and technical needs.
Provide senior-level engineering guidance to network team members, including knowledge sharing for configuration, troubleshooting, and operational support.
Drive the development of secure network architectures by implementing controls such as segmented environments, DMZ frameworks, web filtering, and intrusion prevention capabilities.
Assess the impact of new services and infrastructure changes by producing network designs and architectural recommendations aligned with long-term strategy.
Contribute technical leadership in balancing traditional networking approaches with software-defined and cloud-connected solutions to deliver cost-effective services.
Proactively identify service risks and performance issues, then lead resolution efforts with clear communication and strong technical ownership.

Requirements

5+ years of experience in network engineering, with senior-level responsibility for complex enterprise environments.
Demonstrated expertise designing and implementing internet peering solutions and advanced routing architectures.
Strong hands-on experience with Cisco routers, switches, and related Cisco networking technologies.
Deep understanding of core network protocols such as BGP and OSPF, along with broader Layer 2 and Layer 3 design concepts.
Experience supporting secure network environments that include DMZ design, segmentation, web proxy filtering, intrusion detection or prevention, and data protection controls.
Knowledge of voice and video networking, including VoIP infrastructure and traffic design considerations.
Ability to produce clear technical documentation, communicate effectively with stakeholders, and provide leadership across engineering teams.
Experience with technologies such as Cisco ASA and Cisco ACI is highly valued.
