Data Center Technical Operations Engineer

Location: Chicago, Illinois (Onsite)
Employment Type: Contract

Role Overview

This position supports a data center commissioning team. The primary responsibility is to instruct and certify commissioning vendors to successfully commission electrical data center equipment by executing functional testing scripts. The secondary responsibility involves assisting with the maintenance, growth, and delivery of an accelerated vendor training program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Instruct commissioning vendors on the proper execution of functional testing scripts for electrical data center equipment, including medium and low voltage power systems, UPS, generators, switchgear, PDUs, and Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS).
  • Evaluate vendor technicians against defined competency standards and issue certifications upon successful demonstration of required skills.
  • Conduct hands-on field training sessions and evaluations to ensure vendors can safely and accurately perform pre-functional, functional, and integrated systems testing.
  • Identify gaps in vendor knowledge or performance and implement corrective action plans.
  • Maintain records of vendor certifications, training completions, and evaluation outcomes.
  • Audit vendor commissioning activities onsite to ensure compliance with safety, quality, and environmental requirements.
  • Assist with the ongoing maintenance and growth of the accelerated vendor training program.
  • Support the development, implementation, and delivery of commissioning training products, including instructional materials, assessments, and hands-on exercises.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to inform curriculum updates and ensure training content reflects current equipment, procedures, and standards.
Required Qualifications

Experience: An active Journeyman Electrician license is required, along with 5+ years of experience commissioning electrical systems in data center or mission-critical facility environments. This includes demonstrated experience executing functional testing scripts for electrical data center equipment.

Technical Skills: A strong working knowledge of medium and low voltage power distribution systems is necessary. The role requires the ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, specifications, and sequences of operation.

Professional Skills: The position demands strong verbal and written communication skills to convey technical concepts clearly to varied audiences. The ability to evaluate technical competency and provide constructive, professional feedback is also required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in a formal instruction, training, or mentorship role within a trades or commissioning environment.
  • Familiarity with commissioning documentation such as test plans, scripts, and completion reports.
  • OSHA 30 certification or equivalent.
  • Experience supporting large-scale commissioning programs with multiple concurrent vendors.
  • Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS) or EPMS platforms.
Compensation

The pay rate for this position is between $44.00 and $54.00 per hour.
