Solution Engineer Principal - Business Applications Client is seeking an experienced application-support developer to build internal technical capability for energy platforms. This position combines hands-on software engineering, database development, production support, integration troubleshooting, monitoring, and application enhancement. The role will primarily support our energy related applications, including data-intensive pricing solutions, an enterprise energy-trading and risk-management platform, databases, scheduled jobs, interfaces, reports, and related operational tools. It provides an opportunity to work directly with business subject-matter experts and take meaningful ownership of applications that support critical pricing, risk, trading, transport, settlement, and reporting processes. The Solution Engineer Principal will operate as part of a cross-trained team under the direction of the Solution Engineer Lead. The successful candidate may enter the role with deeper experience in either Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle-based solutions but will be expected to develop sufficient cross-platform knowledge to provide sustainable backup coverage. Job Profile Summary The Solution Engineer Principal - Business Applications is responsible for the day-to-day technical support, controlled development, monitoring, maintenance, and improvement of applications supporting the entire business application portfolio. The role investigates production issues, restores service, analyzes application and data failures, modifies stored procedures and application components, improves monitoring, supports releases and upgrades, and develops enhancements in partnership with business SMEs and the Solution Engineer Lead. The position requires a production-support mindset as well as development capability. The engineer must be able to move between code, databases, scheduled jobs, configuration, interfaces, operational spreadsheets, logs, and business-process evidence to determine why a process failed and how to prevent recurrence. Coordination with packaged-software providers, custom-development partners, market-data services, and SaaS platforms is a secondary responsibility.

  • Provide after-hours support when mission-critical Gas processes or peak operating periods require it.

  • Escalate provider or infrastructure issues with complete technical evidence and remain accountable through resolution.

  • Implement validation that identifies missing or incomplete data instead of allowing hidden errors or unsupported default values to continue through pricing or risk processes.

  • Improve application logging, monitoring, alerting, error handling, recoverability, and operational transparency.

  • Reduce manual work, rework, recurring defects, and dependence on individual subject-matter experts.

  • Contribute to application upgrades, modernization, technical-debt reduction, and lifecycle planning.

  • Trace data from source systems through databases, calculations, interfaces, reports, and downstream consumers.

  • Work directly with business SMEs to reproduce issues, validate results, test corrections, and understand operational impacts.

  • Recognize when a technical change could affect pricing accuracy, risk positions, settlements, customer outcomes, compliance, or financial reporting.

Build a Sustainable Support Model

  • Create and maintain technical documentation, support runbooks, recovery procedures, code and database references, and troubleshooting guides.

  • Cross-train with other application-support engineers to establish primary and backup coverage.

  • Participate in knowledge-transfer sessions with current SMEs, providers, and support teams.

  • Follow established development, testing, release, change-management, access-control, and production-validation procedures.

  • Share technical findings and reusable knowledge with the broader Operations Technology team.

Database and Application Development

  • Advanced SQL skills and experience developing or supporting data-intensive applications.

  • Strong experience with either Microsoft SQL Server/T-SQL or Oracle/SQL, with the ability and willingness to become proficient in the other platform.

  • Experience developing, debugging, and optimizing stored procedures, queries, jobs, data transformations, and reconciliation processes.

  • Experience with at least one enterprise application-development technology, preferably C#/.NET or Java.

  • Ability to understand applications where business logic is distributed across database procedures, custom code, configuration, scheduled jobs, spreadsheets, and interfaces.

Production-Support Experience

  • Experience investigating and resolving production incidents in business-critical applications.

  • Ability to use logs, database evidence, job history, interface files, application behavior, and business results to isolate failures.

  • Experience performing root-cause analysis and implementing preventive corrections.

  • Understanding of monitoring, alerting, release, rollback, environment, and change-control practices.

  • Willingness and ability to provide after-hours production support when business needs require it.

  • Experience validating data across upstream and downstream systems.

  • Familiarity with packaged applications and SaaS integrations.

Communication and Partnership

  • Ability to explain technical issues clearly to business users and nontechnical stakeholders.

  • Strong documentation habits and a willingness to transfer knowledge.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with business SMEs, infrastructure teams, database administrators, external providers, and other developers.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and support production applications, databases, scheduled jobs, integrations, reports, and supporting services.

  • Investigate incidents, determine impact, restore service, and document technical findings.

  • Perform root-cause analysis and implement durable corrections for recurring problems.

  • Develop, test, review, and deploy stored procedures, queries, application components, integrations, reports, and automation.

  • Implement application and data controls that detect missing, incomplete, invalid, or inconsistent information.

  • Improve logging, monitoring, alerting, error handling, recoverability, and support visibility.

  • Support application releases, environment promotions, patches, upgrades, rollback planning, and post-deployment validation.

  • Work with business SMEs to understand requirements, reproduce problems, validate calculations, and complete user-acceptance support.

  • Reconcile data among source systems, application databases, operational reports, and downstream consumers.

  • Maintain source control and comply with development, testing, security, audit, and change-management standards.

  • Develop and maintain runbooks, technical documentation, interface records, job inventories, recovery procedures, and troubleshooting guides.

  • Coordinate technical issues with packaged-software providers, custom-development partners, market-data services, and SaaS platforms as assigned.

  • Cross-train with other team members and provide backup coverage for critical applications and processes.
