About the RoleWe are seeking a highly experienced
Specialty Software Engineer with deep expertise in
SmallTalk to support and modernize core credit card servicing applications. In this contingent role, you will work on complex, large-scale engineering initiatives while contributing to both ongoing feature support and long-term modernization efforts.
You will collaborate closely with stakeholders, analyze multi-faceted engineering challenges, and provide expert technical leadership on a Scrum team. This role also includes guiding modernization work from legacy SmallTalk systems to Java-based backend services.
What You'll Do- Lead complex engineering initiatives for legacy SmallTalk applications used in credit card servicing.
- Consult with cross-functional partners to analyze system challenges and evaluate multiple technical factors to determine solutions.
- Participate in two-week Agile sprints; complete assigned engineering stories and support production-critical applications.
- Contribute to the multi-year modernization effort transitioning SmallTalk components to Java backend services.
- Package and deploy SmallTalk applications in non-production environments.
- Collaborate with engineering and product partners to align on requirements, design principles, and compliance considerations.
- Mentor teammates and help organize technical workstreams as a senior engineer.
Required Qualifications- 5+ years of Specialty Software Engineering experience
or equivalent through work, consulting, training, military service, or education. - 10+ years of SmallTalk development experience.
- Strong understanding of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) concepts and design principles.
- Ability to package and deploy SmallTalk applications in non-production environments.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work on multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Demonstrated ability to quickly learn business processes and domain-specific applications.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience with Microsoft SQL Server.
- Full-stack Java experience, especially backend development.
- Exposure to React or modern UI frameworks.
- Experience leading engineering projects or workstreams.
- Recent hands-on engineering experience (as opposed to project management roles).
Additional Details- This is a backfill position.
- Legacy system modernization expected to continue through 2027-2028.
- Candidates who previously worked in SmallTalk but have had a short break may still be considered if recent engineering experience is strong.
