About the RoleWe are seeking a highly skilled
Specialty Software Engineer with strong experience in
SmallTalk to support and modernize legacy credit-card servicing applications used across call centers for both consumer and small-business accounts. You will work as a senior contributor within an agile scrum team, performing development, maintenance, and modernization tasks as the platform transitions from SmallTalk to Java through 2027-2028.
In this contingent assignment, you will collaborate with engineering partners, evaluate moderately complex technical challenges, and contribute to the planning and delivery of Specialty Software Engineering initiatives. You'll leverage your strong understanding of object-oriented design principles to help evolve a mission-critical technology stack.
Key Responsibilities- Develop, maintain, and enhance applications built using SmallTalk.
- Package and deploy SmallTalk applications in non-production environments.
- Analyze and resolve moderately complex engineering issues requiring evaluation of multiple variables.
- Participate in agile ceremonies and deliver stories within two-week sprints.
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners to support modernization efforts transitioning the system to Java-based backend services.
- Review legacy architecture and contribute to long-term modernization planning.
- Apply a strong understanding of object-oriented programming techniques and design patterns.
- Contribute as a senior engineering member, providing technical guidance when needed.
- Communicate effectively with team members, product owners, and partner groups.
Required Qualifications- 4+ years of Specialty Software Engineering experience (or equivalent through work, consulting, training, military experience, or education).
- 5+ years of SmallTalk development experience.
- Hands-on experience deploying SmallTalk applications to non-production environments.
- Strong understanding of OOP concepts and software design principles.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and attention to detail.
- Ability to learn business domains quickly and manage multiple tasks.
Nice to Have- Experience with Java, especially backend engineering (Full Stack Java with React UI is a plus).
- Exposure to Microsoft SQL Server or relational database environments.
- Background working on large-scale modernization efforts.
- Recent engineering experience (candidates with long non-engineering gaps may face challenges ramping up).
