Position Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Civil Subject Matter Expert (SME) with deep expertise in foundation design and substation infrastructure to support large-scale energy and power delivery projects across California.

This individual will serve as a technical authority and advisor , providing guidance across engineering design, construction execution, and project delivery. The ideal candidate brings a strong background in substation civil design, geotechnical coordination, and foundation systems supporting high-voltage infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership
  • Serve as the civil engineering SME for substation and energy infrastructure projects
  • Provide expert guidance on foundation design, including drilled piers, shallow foundations, mat foundations, and equipment supports
  • Review and validate civil and structural designs for substations, switchyards, and related facilities
  • Support engineering teams with constructability reviews and value engineering recommendations

Substation & Site Development
  • Lead civil scope for greenfield and brownfield substation projects
  • Oversee grading, drainage, access roads, retaining structures, and site layout
  • Ensure integration of civil designs with electrical and structural requirements

Geotechnical & Foundation Coordination
  • Interface with geotechnical engineers to interpret soil reports, seismic considerations, and ground improvement strategies
  • Provide recommendations for foundation types based on site conditions and equipment loads
  • Evaluate settlement, slope stability, and site-specific risks

Construction & Field Support
  • Provide support during construction including RFI responses, field issue resolution, and design clarifications
  • Participate in site visits and inspections as needed
  • Ensure alignment between design intent and field execution

Compliance & Standards
  • Ensure designs comply with California codes, seismic requirements, and utility standards
  • Maintain adherence to industry standards (IEEE, ASCE, ACI, Caltrans where applicable)
  • Support permitting and regulatory coordination

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (Master's preferred)
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required (California strongly preferred)
  • 10-15+ years of experience in civil engineering for power/energy infrastructure
  • Proven experience with substation design and construction
  • Extensive experience with foundation systems for heavy equipment and structural loads
  • Strong understanding of California seismic design requirements
  • Experience working on utility-scale or EPC projects

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting major utilities (e.g., PG&E, SCE, SDG&E)
  • Background in high-voltage transmission or distribution projects
  • Familiarity with EPC execution models and multidisciplinary coordination
  • Experience in construction oversight or owner's engineering roles

Contract Details
  • Duration: 24 months
  • Location: California (San Francisco Bay area and Gilroy)
  • Schedule: Full-time contract (40+ hours/week expected)
  • Compensation: Competitive hourly rate (based on experience)
  • Per Diem / Travel: May be provided based on project location
