What We're Looking ForToyota's Integrated Vehicle Systems (IVS) organization develops innovative platforms and development tools that enable next-generation ADAS and ADS technologies for North American customers. We are seeking a highly experienced Principal Engineer who thrives at the intersection of technology leadership, platform strategy, software development, and process innovation, and who is passionate about mentoring others while driving technical excellence across the organization. This role reports to a Senior Engineering Manager.
What You'll Be DoingSuccess in this role means creating scalable platforms, development tools, and engineering processes that accelerate innovation while improving quality, efficiency, and technical capability across the organization. You'll collaborate with engineers, leaders, and stakeholders across Toyota to solve complex challenges, develop strategic solutions, and influence the future of advanced vehicle technologies.
- Lead the architecture, development, and evaluation of innovative platforms and development tools that support ADAS and ADS feature development tailored to North American driving environments and customer needs.
- Drive cross-functional projects from concept through execution by managing schedules, budgets, deliverables, risks, and stakeholder alignment to achieve business and technical objectives.
- Serve as a trusted technical advisor and subject matter expert, influencing engineering decisions and representing platform and development tool technologies across R&D, Toyota business units, and external partners.
- Coach and mentor engineers in developing data-driven proposals, strengthening technical problem-solving capabilities, and successfully implementing impactful solutions.
- Identify, champion, and implement process improvements that increase operational efficiency, enhance engineering quality, and support continuous improvement initiatives across the department.
- Evaluate system architectures, analyze performance, and develop data-driven approaches to address complex development scenarios and critical edge cases.
- Utilize software development, automation, data analysis, and visualization capabilities to generate insights that support strategic decision-making and engineering excellence.
What You Bring- Bachelor's degree that provides a strong foundation in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- 7 or more years of professional experience where you've successfully delivered complex engineering solutions and technical initiatives.
- 5 or more years of experience supporting Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and/or Automated Driving Systems (ADS) technologies.
- Proven experience architecting and developing engineering platforms and development tools that improve product quality, operational efficiency, or technical capabilities.
- Experience using Python or similar programming languages to automate analysis, process data, and generate meaningful insights.
- Demonstrated ability to lead architecture and development projects while effectively communicating technical concepts through written proposals, presentations, and stakeholder engagement.
- Strong organizational, time management, prioritization, communication, and collaboration skills, with a passion for developing and mentoring team members.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 25% and support approximately 10% overtime as business needs require.
