Overview

We are seeking an experienced Field Engineer to support large-scale data center infrastructure projects in New Albany, Ohio. This role is ideal for candidates with a strong foundation in structured cabling, fiber optics, low-voltage systems, data center construction, and telecommunications infrastructure who are looking to expand their technical and project leadership responsibilities.
As a Field Engineer, you'll serve as the technical bridge between field operations, project management, procurement teams, subcontractors, and customers. You'll be responsible for ensuring installations are completed according to design, managing material requirements, supporting quality assurance efforts, and helping drive successful project execution from pre-construction planning through project closeout.

Primary Responsibilities

Technical Project Support

  • Review and interpret construction drawings, cable schedules, specifications, scope documents, and technical manuals.
  • Analyze Bill of Materials (BOMs) to verify project requirements and material alignment.
  • Develop shop drawings, project documentation, and technical submittals.
  • Support project managers with technical planning, installation strategies, and project execution.
  • Assist with constructability reviews and provide recommendations to improve project efficiency and quality.

Structured Cabling & Fiber Expertise

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for structured cabling and fiber optic infrastructure.
  • Provide guidance on fiber optic cable construction, fiber types, pathways, connectivity standards, and approved materials.
  • Support installation teams with troubleshooting and technical issue resolution.
  • Validate cable routing, pathway requirements, termination methods, and system designs.
  • Ensure installations meet customer specifications and industry standards.

Data Center Construction Support

  • Support large-scale data center deployments involving fiber and copper infrastructure.
  • Review cable schedules and coordinate material requirements for active construction projects.
  • Perform field walks to validate existing conditions and identify installation challenges.
  • Evaluate pathways, rack layouts, cable routing, and infrastructure readiness.
  • Assist in identifying project risks and developing mitigation strategies.

Material & Procurement Management

  • Coordinate material procurement activities for data center projects.
  • Support procurement efforts involving customer-specific material requirements and approved vendor lists.
  • Review BOMs and material requests for accuracy and completeness.
  • Track material availability and lead times to ensure project schedules are maintained.
  • Work closely with field leadership and project managers to forecast material needs.
  • Assist with procurement planning for fiber optic cable, connectivity components, pathway materials, hardware, and supporting infrastructure.

Quality Assurance & Testing

  • Conduct field quality inspections throughout project execution.
  • Verify installations meet project specifications, quality standards, and customer requirements.
  • Support cable testing, system verification, and acceptance processes.
  • Identify deficiencies and manage punch-list items through project completion.
  • Ensure all documentation is completed accurately and submitted on time.

Site Assessments & Project Planning

  • Perform site surveys and pre-construction assessments.
  • Document existing conditions and identify potential project constraints.
  • Gather information required for estimating and project planning.
  • Develop detailed scope narratives and technical recommendations.
  • Assist estimating teams by providing field expertise during proposal development.

Coordination & Communication

  • Act as the technical liaison between field operations, project management, subcontractors, and general contractors.
  • Participate in project meetings, planning sessions, and coordination efforts.
  • Communicate project challenges, material concerns, and schedule impacts to stakeholders.
  • Support customer interactions and technical discussions as needed.
  • Collaborate with subcontractors during pre-construction planning and scope reviews.

Training & Leadership

  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to technicians, leads, and field personnel.
  • Assist with training initiatives and best-practice development.
  • Support field leaders with project startup, workflow planning, and documentation management.
  • Promote quality workmanship and adherence to installation standards across all project teams.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience supporting structured cabling or telecommunications infrastructure projects.
  • Data center construction or data center operations experience.
  • Strong understanding of fiber optic cable construction and fiber types.
  • Experience reviewing and interpreting cable schedules and construction drawings.
  • Experience reading and managing Bills of Material (BOMs).
  • Knowledge of material procurement and project material management.
  • Understanding of structured cabling systems, pathways, racks, and telecommunications infrastructure.
  • Ability to conduct field walks and identify construction or installation challenges.
  • Strong communication and coordination skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
