Job Description
Engagement context: ECC → S/4HANA assessment and roadmap study for a discrete/process manufacturing client with one of the most complex VC implementations in its landscape (deep model hierarchies, heavy dependency logic, and costing integration).
Role Purpose Assess the existing Variant Configuration landscape in ECC, determine its readiness for S/4HANA (LO-VC vs. Advanced Variant Configuration), quantify remediation effort, and recommend a technically sound, business-aligned migration path.
Job Responsibilities
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
· Perform a full inventory and complexity assessment of the current VC model: configurable materials, class/characteristic structures, variant tables, variant functions, object dependencies (preconditions, selection conditions, procedures, constraints), and configuration profiles.
· Analyse VC integration touchpoints across SD (variant pricing, VC in quotations and sales orders), PP (super BOM, super routing, order BOM, ETO scenarios), MM, and CO (sales order costing, variant costing, valuation of configurable stock).
· Evaluate the fit and gap between the current LO-VC setup and S/4HANA options: continue with LO-VC (classic) versus migrate to Advanced Variant Configuration (AVC), including constraint-based modelling and the AVC migration tooling.
· Identify simplification items, deprecated functionality, custom VC code (user exits, variant functions, BAdIs), and interface dependencies that require rework.
· Estimate remediation and migration effort, define risks and mitigation options, and document the recommended target VC architecture and phasing.
· Support the overall S/4HANA assessment team with VC-specific inputs into the business case, roadmap, testing strategy, and data-migration approach.
· Run workshops with product engineering, sales, production planning, and finance stakeholders to validate findings and secure buy-in.
· Produce boardroom-ready deliverables: current-state assessment, options analysis, recommendation, and implementation roadmap.
