Server Administrator (Windows / VMware) - Contract

Location: Primarily Remote
Residency Requirement: Must live within ~90 minutes of Wilmington, OH
Onsite: Occasional (outages and emergencies)
Duration: 12-month contract with strong extension potential

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Server Administrator to support a Windows-heavy, on-premise environment during a critical organizational and systems transition. This role will play a key role in maintaining server stability, patching cadence, and operational readiness while legacy systems remain in place ahead of a larger platform migration. The environment is stable but complex, and dedicated server ownership is essential to reduce security risk and maintain uptime through an extended transition period.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer and support Windows Server environments (2008-2022)
  • Own monthly patching cycles, including planning, execution, validation, and issue remediation
  • Automate server reboots and startup procedures, including handling service dependencies
  • Create and maintain shutdown, reboot, and recovery documentation
  • Perform ongoing "care and feeding" of on-prem servers:
    • Monitoring
    • Troubleshooting
    • Maintenance
    • Performance optimization
  • Execute server-related update and stabilization projects to maintain reliability until future system migrations are completed
  • Support cross-functional initiatives as needed, including:
    • Active Directory administration
    • Backup processes
    • Desktop automation tasks

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong Windows Server administration experience (patching, support, configuration)
  • Hands-on experience with VxRail and/or VMware Horizon
  • Experience automating server reboots and operational processes
  • Solid Active Directory experience
  • Comfort working in on-prem, Windows-centric environments

Nice-to-Have / Secondary Skills

  • Linux server exposure (not required, but a plus)
  • Broad IT skillset and willingness to assist outside strict server boundaries

Work Environment & Context

  • The organization is in the middle of a large-scale transition, with many legacy systems remaining operational through at least 2026
  • A Technology Services Agreement (TSA) remains in effect, and major platform replacements are not expected until 2027
  • This role is critical to ensuring security, stability, and operational continuity during the transition
