Summary

Structural Project Engineer: Aluminum & Steel Vessel Construction
Job Summary

Core Group Resources is hiring an experienced Structural Project Engineer to support the design, analysis, and construction of aluminum and steel vessels. You\'ll handle structural design and detail engineering across the full construction lifecycle, producing models, drawings, calculations, bills of material, and production-ready designs that are safe, compliant, cost-effective, and buildable.

This is a hands-on engineering role in an active shipyard. You\'ll split your time between the engineering office and fabrication shops, production areas, and vessels under construction, and you\'ll work closely with production, planning, quality, and program management to turn engineering requirements into practical solutions. Depending on experience, the role may include mentoring junior engineers and designers and overseeing engineering subcontractors.
Responsibilities
  • Design aluminum and steel vessel structures to vessel specifications, contract requirements, and applicable marine standards, including ABS, USCG, NAVSEA, and AISC.
  • Develop structural models, production drawings, calculations, specifications, and detailed bills of material.
  • Perform structural analysis in support of vessel fabrication and shipyard projects.
  • Loft and nest vessel components for CNC cutting and fabrication.
  • Support structural design through fabrication, assembly, installation, testing, and vessel completion.
  • Resolve structural issues during construction, and disposition non-conformances, repairs, deviations, and field conditions.
  • Coordinate with planners, weld engineers, designers, production leads, quality, and other engineering disciplines so designs are practical and executable.
  • Support weight, stability, and structural integration assessments as required.
  • Maintain structural standards, design libraries, and engineering documentation.
  • Support estimating and proposal work during early project stages.
  • Participate in vessel testing and sea trials as required.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of structural design, fabrication, and engineering processes.
Requirements
  • Bachelor\'s degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • 5+ years of relevant marine engineering, shipbuilding, or vessel design experience.
  • Working knowledge of aluminum and/or steel vessel structures.
  • Experience developing structural drawings, models, calculations, and production documentation.
  • Strong CAD and 3D modeling skills.
  • Understanding of vessel arrangements and how structure interfaces with mechanical, electrical, and outfitting systems.
  • Familiarity with marine classification and regulatory requirements, including ABS.
  • Ability to read complex engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, and technical documentation.
  • Strong grasp of structural design and fabrication principles, and the ability to communicate solutions clearly to engineering, production, quality, and project stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • U.S. citizenship, required due to government and defense contract requirements.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment screening and meet project access requirements.
Preferred Requirements
  • Bachelor\'s degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience supporting vessel design and construction in an active fabrication or shipyard environment.
  • ShipConstructor experience.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Rhino, or similar design platforms.
  • Experience lofting and nesting for CNC production.
  • Familiarity with CFR, classification society rules, ABYC, IEEE, NAVSEA, or military vessel requirements.
