Job Overview & Purpose

The Mid-Level Storage Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, and day-to-day administration of complex Storage Area Networks (SAN) and Network Attached Storage (NAS). At the DOT, this often involves supporting large-scale data migrations and ensuring that storage systems are accessible across both IPv4 and IPv6 protocols.

Key Responsibilities

  • Infrastructure Management: Provision storage, create volumes, and manage LUNs (Logical Unit Numbers) for diverse server environments.

  • Lifecycle Operations: Perform maintenance, firmware upgrades, and configuration changes on enterprise hardware (typically Dell EMC, NetApp, or Pure Storage).

  • Performance Monitoring: Track capacity, health, and latency metrics to resolve bottlenecks before they impact DOT mission-critical applications.

  • Data Protection: Implement and test robust backup and recovery procedures. You will likely support COOP (Continuity of Operations) and periodic Disaster Recovery drills.

  • IPv6 Transition: A specific priority for federal agencies in 2026 is configuring and troubleshooting storage technologies to communicate over IPv6.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience: Usually 5+ years in storage solutions engineering.

  • Technical Stack: * Expertise in SAN/NAS (Fibre Channel, iSCSI, NFS, CIFS).

    • Proficiency with Enterprise Backup software (e.g., Commvault, Veritas, or Veeam).

    • Knowledge of Cloud Storage integration (AWS/Azure GovCloud).

  • Education & Certifications: * Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related engineering field.

    • Mandatory: Industry certifications like NetApp Certified Data Administrator (NCDA) or Dell EMC Certified Specialist.

    • ITIL v4 Foundation certification is frequently required for federal contracting.
