Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Aerospace Cybersecurity Engineer (Hardware) to join the Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (CoE) and lead cybersecurity activities for aerospace and defense programs.

The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience in aerospace cybersecurity, embedded systems security, threat modeling, risk assessments, hardware security, cryptography, vulnerability management, secure development, and cybersecurity compliance. This position will work closely with engineering teams, customers, federal contractors, and internal cybersecurity organizations supporting federal and commercial aerospace programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead cybersecurity activities for aerospace, avionics, embedded systems, and defense programs.
  • Perform threat modeling, cybersecurity risk assessments, and security architecture reviews.
  • Define and implement cybersecurity measures for aerospace embedded systems, controllers, avionics, and aircraft platforms.
  • Support secure software and firmware development activities, including secure boot, code signing, cryptography, and secure firmware update processes.
  • Apply hardware security and Root of Trust concepts to embedded aerospace systems.
  • Conduct cybersecurity testing, vulnerability assessments, security testing, and penetration testing.
  • Support cybersecurity activities throughout the Secure Development Lifecycle (SDLC).
  • Ensure compliance with aerospace, federal, and cybersecurity requirements.
  • Apply industry standards and frameworks including DO-326A / ED-202A, DO-356A, NIST Cybersecurity Framework, and FIPS 140-3.
  • Support ITAR-controlled and federal aerospace programs and ensure cybersecurity activities meet applicable requirements.
  • Review customer cybersecurity requirements, RFIs, RFQs, statements of work, and technical specifications.
  • Contribute to cybersecurity proposals, technical responses, and customer presentations.
  • Interface directly with customers, federal contractors, engineering teams, and cybersecurity stakeholders.
  • Support cybersecurity laboratory testing and occasional on-site assessments at customer and aircraft locations.
  • Lead technical discussions and provide cybersecurity guidance across aerospace engineering programs.

Required Qualifications

  • 8+ years of cybersecurity engineering experience.
  • 3+ years of aerospace cybersecurity experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience with aerospace threat modeling and cybersecurity risk assessments.
  • Strong experience with embedded systems security.
  • Experience with cryptography and code signing.
  • Experience with vulnerability management and cybersecurity testing.
  • Strong understanding of Secure Development Lifecycle (SDLC) practices.
  • Experience with hardware security and Root of Trust concepts.
  • Working knowledge of DO-326A / ED-202A and DO-356A.
  • Experience with NIST Cybersecurity Framework and FIPS 140-3.
  • Experience supporting ITAR-controlled and/or federal aerospace programs.
  • Strong understanding of aerospace embedded systems, avionics, controllers, and aircraft cybersecurity architectures.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to lead technical discussions with customers and engineering teams.
  • Ability to work from the Pittsburgh cybersecurity laboratory.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% 15% as required.
  • U.S. Citizenship (USC) is mandatory.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting FAA, DoD, defense, or commercial aerospace programs.
  • Knowledge of aircraft control systems, avionics, and aerospace hardware security architectures.
  • Experience working with federal contractors and government cybersecurity requirements.
  • Experience conducting cybersecurity assessments in laboratory and aircraft/field environments.
  • Experience participating in customer-facing cybersecurity engagements and technical proposal development.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a hands-on Senior Cybersecurity Engineer with deep aerospace and embedded systems expertise who can independently lead cybersecurity assessments, threat modeling, security architecture reviews, secure development activities, and customer engagements across aerospace and defense programs.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to work from the Pittsburgh cybersecurity lab.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% 15% for customer engagements and field testing.
  • Strong communication skills to lead technical discussions and customer interactions.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen (USC) due to ITAR and federal program requirements.
