Position Overview
We are seeking a highly specialized Advantage Database Administrator (Advantage DBA) to
support, optimize, and maintain mission-critical legacy systems built on Advantage Database
Server (ADS). This role requires deep, hands-on expertise with Advantage DB internals, not
transferable relational database experience.
Required Skills & Experience
* 8-12 years of proven, hands-on experience administering Advantage Database Server (ADS) in
production
* Transportation and logistics experience is must.
* Proven experience with Advantage data dictionaries, Advantage SQL and proprietary access
methods, Index rebuilds and corruption recovery
* Strong understanding of Advantage DB architecture, including data dictionaries, index files, and
locking behavior
* Deep understanding of Advantage locking model and transaction behavior
* Experience supporting mission-critical legacy production systems
* Experience working with Advantage SQL and Advantage proprietary access methods
* Expertise in diagnosing table corruption, index inconsistencies, and memo file issues
* Experience supporting legacy applications built on Advantage DB
* Strong knowledge of Windows-based database services (Linux a plus)
* Familiarity with backup, restore, and recovery strategies specific to Advantage DB
* Ability to work independently in low-documentation, legacy environments
* Experience supporting ISV products using Advantage DB
* Exposure to manufacturing, logistics, distribution, or embedded systems
* Experience assisting with data migration from Advantage DB to modern RDBMS
* Knowledge of Visual FoxPro, Delphi, or legacy C/C++ applications
Key Responsibilities
* Administer, maintain, and support Advantage Database Server (ADS) in production environments
* Perform low-level troubleshooting of Table corruption, Index (.ADI) rebuilds, Memo file failures,
Locking conflicts
* Manage data dictionaries, free tables, and proprietary Advantage indexing mechanisms
* Perform database installation, configuration, upgrades, and patching across Windows and/or
Linux platforms
* Manage data integrity, indexing strategies, and table-level locking mechanisms specific to
Advantage DB
* Monitor database performance and proactively resolve contention, corruption, and stability
issues
* Tune Advantage DB for high-throughput transactional workloads
* Manage data dictionaries, free tables, and proprietary Advantage indexing mechanisms
* Diagnose and resolve long-running locks, phantom reads, and file-level contention
* Troubleshoot complex database issues involving table corruption, memo files, and index rebuilds
* Support application teams with schema changes, query optimization, and data recovery
* Implement and maintain backup, restore, and disaster recovery procedures
* Assist in legacy system modernization planning, including data migration assessments (where
applicable)
* Support legacy ISV applications where source code may be unavailable
* Provide forensic-level RCA for database crashes or data inconsistencies
* Support regulatory audits and historical data validation
* Advise leadership on risk exposure, succession planning, and modernization feasibility
* Document tribal knowledge and operational runbooks for continuity
* Document database standards, procedures, and operational runbooks
* Act as the primary escalation point for Advantage DB–related incidents
