Database Administrator

Description

We are seeking an experienced Database Administrator to join a mid-to-large enterprise environment supporting critical business systems. This is an onsite, contract-to-hire opportunity with long-term potential for the right candidate.

What You'll Be Doing

This role blends day-to-day operational support with project-based work:

• Support urgent database requests and tickets (approximately 5% of time)
• Lead and assist with upgrades, migrations, and project work (about 50%)
• Perform monitoring, health checks, and automation oversight (about 45%)
• Review backup reports and troubleshoot backup or job failures
• Support enterprise backup and disaster recovery processes
• Collaborate with infrastructure and application teams across on-prem and cloud environments

Technical Environment

You'll work in a complex, enterprise-scale environment that includes:

• Microsoft SQL Server (2016, 2022)
• Oracle (training and ramp-up supported)
• Linux and Linux imaging
• VMware (with potential changes in virtualization platforms)
• Some Hyper-V
• CIS imaging standards
• Enterprise backup and disaster recovery solutions
• On-prem and cloud-based systems
• Support for large, mission-critical platforms (including SAP and SQL-based systems)

Required Experience & Skills

• 5+ years of Database Administration experience
• Strong SQL Server administration background (SQL Server 2012 and newer required)
• Hands-on experience with:
• Daily database administration and health checks
• Performance monitoring, tuning, and trend analysis
• SQL Server upgrades and migrations (especially 2016 ? 2022)
• Working knowledge of:
• SSMS and SSIS concepts
• Backup, recovery, and maintenance strategies
• Comfortable working in Linux-based environments
• Willingness and ability to learn Oracle administration (prior Oracle experience not required)

Nice to Have

• Experience in mixed virtualization environments (VMware / Hyper-V)
• Exposure to enterprise-scale or highly regulated environments
• Experience supporting both on-prem and cloud database platforms

Requirements

A minimum of 5 years of experience in database administration within an enterprise environment.
Proficiency in Microsoft SQL Server administration, with experience in versions 2012 and newer.
Hands-on expertise in performance monitoring, tuning, and database health checks.
Familiarity with backup, recovery strategies, and maintenance protocols.
Comfortable working in Linux-based systems, including Linux imaging.
Willingness to acquire skills in Oracle database administration, even without prior experience.
Knowledge of enterprise-scale database platforms, including on-premises and cloud environments.
Experience with virtualization platforms such as VMware and Hyper-V is preferred.
