Overview
We're seeking an Associate Director for the DevOps & Infrastructure Team who will lead our platform engineering efforts while remaining deeply technical and hands-on. This is a working leader role with equal emphasis on hands-on technical contributions and team leadership. You will architect infrastructure solutions, build infrastructure-as-code and automation tooling, provide operational support and ensure system reliability and security, and mentor engineers while setting technical vision for the organization. Some key areas of accountability:
Strategic Planning & Best Practices - Oversees strategic planning for infrastructure, security automation, and platform engineering initiatives; disseminates strategic goals and ensures team implementation; develops and establishes best practices for infrastructure as code, emerging DevSecOps workflows, cloud architecture patterns, and operational excellence; provides technical direction that aligns with organizational objectives.
Budget & Financial Management - Manages budget planning and execution for cloud and on-prem infrastructure costs, tooling licenses, and services (approximately $1M annually); provides financial stewardship of infrastructure spending; optimizes cloud costs and resource utilization; forecasts infrastructure capacity needs and associated costs; adjusts spending priorities based on organizational needs.
Hands-On Technical Leadership - Designs and implements infrastructure solutions using modern emerging DevSecOps tools and practices; writes Terraform modules and automation code; configures and optimizes Kubernetes clusters and cloud environments; participates in on-call rotation; conducts code reviews; debugs complex production issues; works directly alongside the team.
Security & Compliance Leadership - Owns security and compliance outcomes for infrastructure and emerging DevSecOps practices; implements automated security scanning and vulnerability management throughout the software development lifecycle; ensures timely remediation of vulnerabilities and security findings; builds and maintains secrets management, certificate automation, and access control systems; drives compliance initiatives; establishes security monitoring and incident response; collaborates with security teams on penetration testing and remediation.
Communication & Stakeholder Management - Develops communication plans for infrastructure changes, migrations, and technical initiatives; coordinates with IT teams and business stakeholders; determines timelines and resource requirements for infrastructure projects; translates technical concepts for non-technical audiences; represents infrastructure perspectives in cross-functional planning.
Technical Problem Resolution - Analyzes and resolves complex infrastructure, performance, and security challenges; applies deep technical expertise and pattern recognition; interprets and implements policies related to security compliance, resource management, and operational standards; ensures stewardship of cloud resources and infrastructure assets.
Principal Responsibilities
1. Oversees and manages in the strategic planning process; disseminates strategic goals to the team and ensures goals are implemented; develops and establishes best practices.
2. Manages, hires, develops existing as well as new staff; assists in the workforce staffing plans.
3. Responsible for making moderate to significant improvements of processes, systems, and functional output of the department or work/objectives of a team/s.
4. Participate in the development of communication plans for administrative, operational, or technical changes; determine timeline for the dissemination of communications and the support and resource requirements associated with each change.
5. Analyzes and resolves problems through drawing from prior experiences. Interprets policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, contracts, resource management in defined areas).
6. Supervises staff to assure accountability and stewardship of campus resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree and eight years of experience or equivalent education and experience.
Skills and Abilities
Proven ability to manage and develop staff.
Well-developed time management, organizational, oral, and written communication, and presentation skills.
Proven ability to recognize problems and create effective plans.
Proven ability to manage multiple/complex projects, meeting deadlines and budget.
