Role Summary
The SAN Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, managing, and troubleshooting enterprise Storage Area Network (SAN) solutions.
This role ensures the high availability, performance, and reliability of the organisation's storage infrastructure. The engineer will collaborate closely with server, virtualisation, network, and application teams to support mission-critical systems.
Key Responsibilities
1. SAN Architecture & Management
- Design, deploy, and maintain SAN infrastructure, including block storage, fabric switches, and storage arrays
- Manage zoning, LUN provisioning, masking, and multipathing configurations
- Perform capacity planning, performance tuning, and storage optimisation
2. Storage Systems Administration
- Manage enterprise storage platforms such as:
- Dell EMC
- NetApp
- HPE 3PAR / Primera
- IBM
- Hitachi
- Administer replication technologies, including:
- SRDF
- Snap Mirror
- RecoverPoint
- Implement and manage data protection strategies, including snapshots and clones
3. SAN Fabric Management
- Configure and maintain Brocade and Cisco MDS Fibre Channel switches
- Manage firmware upgrades, patching, fabric zoning, and fault isolation
- Monitor SAN health using vendor tools and infrastructure monitoring platforms
4. Performance & Troubleshooting
- Diagnose and resolve SAN and storage issues impacting servers, databases, and applications
- Perform root cause analysis for storage and I/O performance problems
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams for end-to-end issue resolution
5. Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity
- Implement disaster recovery (DR) strategies using replication technologies
- Participate in DR drills, failover testing, and documentation updates
6. Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate technical documentation for storage environments, configurations, and procedures
- Ensure compliance with organisational policies, security standards, and regulatory requirements
