Software Engineer (Level 3 & 4 Openings)
Hybrid in Charlotte, NC
Qualifications
o 3-7+ years with Apache Spark for big data processing
o 3+ years with Python/Django backend development
o 3+ years building tools or platforms for high-volume data users
o 3-5+ years working with Google Cloud or equivalent cloud platforms
o 3+ years managing OpenShift/Kubernetes containerized workloads
o Experience supporting data-heavy financial or regulated environments preferred
Overview
- This role supports the Model Risk Management platform. Wells Fargo uses statistical models to make risk decisions (e.g., credit card approvals). The models execute on a server-based platform, and this team manages and evolves that platform, enabling risk models to run at scale.
- The platform is also used by statisticians who work with large datasets (millions of accounts) to build and test statistical models. Engineers on this team configure the platform and build tools that enable these users to process data and run analytical workloads.
- This platform is one of the first at the company to be fully moved to Google Cloud Platform, and the complexity of the workloads requires strong engineering proficiency with Google Cloud Platform, Apache Spark, containerized microservices, and distributed data processing. Experience in financial services is preferred but not required; experience working with large-scale data is equally relevant.
- Additional skills related to building AI/ML solutions are a plus.
Technical Skills
o Proficiency in Spark frameworks (PySpark, Scala, or Java)
o Strong experience with Docker/Kubernetes concepts
o Hands-on OpenShift administration
o Experience with conda environments
o Strong coding in Python, Scala, or Java
o CI/CD exposure: GitHub Actions, Helm, Harness, Sonar
o Strong debugging skills across distributed systems
o Knowledge of Google Cloud Platform services (GCS, IAM, GKE, Cloud Run, etc.)
Education
o Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline
Key Responsibilities
Platform & Architecture Leadership
o Lead design, deployment, and management of OpenShift clusters or Google Cloud Platform projects supporting containerized Spark applications
o Architect and enhance the platform used for executing statistical risk models
o Drive platform modernization and cloud adoption initiatives
Distributed Data Processing
o Architect and oversee large-scale data processing workflows using Apache Spark
o Optimize Spark jobs for performance and cost efficiency using Kubernetes orchestration and auto-scaling
o Oversee integration of Spark with data sources (Kafka, S3S, databases, data lakes)
Application & Tooling Development
o Lead development of Python-based microservices and backend tools (Django preferred) to support statisticians and data users
o Ensure scalability, usability, and reliability of tools and platform features
Automation & CI/CD
o Design and govern CI/CD pipelines in GitHub Actions, Sonar, Helm, Harness, etc.
o Implement automation across deployments, environment management, and testing
Monitoring & Reliability
o Monitor and tune cluster health, performance, and resource allocation using Prometheus, Grafana, and Google Cloud Platform tools
o Troubleshoot distributed and cloud-native system issues
Security & Compliance
o Ensure solutions follow enterprise security requirements
o Implement RBAC, encryption, and secure coding patterns
Cross-Functional Leadership
o Partner with data scientists, platform engineering, DevOps, and architecture teams
o Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior and senior engineers
o Lead production deployments and root-cause analysis efforts

This is a Contract position based out of Charlotte, NC.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $53.00 - $74.00/hr.
