Additionally, Forest Assets manages more than 94,000 acres of forests across North Carolina that are used for teaching, research, extension, and recreation.

The Director of Information Technology and Facilities serves a critical role by providing solution-oriented leadership for all aspects of our technology and facilities needs in CNR. To serve the college effectively, the role requires a balance of technical aptitude, strategic management, advocacy, and proactive engagement with the college community and other university stakeholders. This position reports to the dean and is a key member of the CNR Executive Team.

Essential Job Duties

The Director of Information Technology (IT) and Facilities is a critical leadership role in the College of Natural Resources (CNR). The director is responsible for ensuring the continuous advancement of the facilities, IT infrastructure, data security, and technical support services within CNR and for providing strategic direction and management of all IT and facilities operations. Reporting directly to the dean and serving as a key member of the CNR Executive Team, the director proactively serves all members of the CNR community by maintaining technical proficiency, staying abreast of emerging technology trends, actively engaging and advocating within the college and within the university, and by overseeing a team of IT and facilities professionals. Although this role is primarily during standard business hours, some evening and weekend work could be required, particularly when emergency situations occur that involve facilities and/or IT.

This position leads a team of IT and facilities professionals, providing technical support and guidance to faculty, staff, postdocs, and students across three departments, an interdisciplinary center and several research cooperatives, while ensuring the continuous advancement of the college's IT infrastructure and services.

Other Responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Strategic Leadership and Planning (20%)
  • Provide strategic leadership to establish an overall vision for IT and facilities operations in CNR. Develop priorities and an implementation plan, both short-term and long-term. Regularly evaluate, assess, and report on the effectiveness of the implemented plans.
  • Regularly and comprehensively assess the college's current and future space, facility, and technology infrastructure challenges and needs by working directly with Department Heads and other unit leaders in CNR.
  • Keep informed of best practices and new approaches. Analyze and recommend emerging technologies and foster innovation to enhance CNR's capabilities and future readiness.
  • Represent and advocate for CNR's IT and facilities needs at the university level by proactively maintaining productive relationships with the Office of Information Technology (OIT), the Facilities Division, and other relevant university entities, and by actively serving on key committees and advisory groups.

Management of IT Infrastructure and Data (30%)
  • Oversee the management of all aspects of CNR IT systems, including hardware, software, and peripherals, ensuring they meet both immediate and long-term needs. Responsible for the reliability, security, and scalability of CNR's IT infrastructure, including network communications, active directory management, and storage. Serve as the primary point of contact with OIT.
  • Maintain the integrity, security, management, and compliance of all electronic data across the CNR departments and units, proactively monitoring, educating, and enforcing university security and data management requirements and providing robust backup systems.
  • Provide expert assistance and technical consultation/support for CNR faculty, staff, and college leadership so as to address complex IT needs, develop data management plans, and implement best practices for IT and computing for teaching, research, extension, and administrative work.
  • Ensure that CNR faculty, staff, and students are adequately equipped with training, user guides, and general support when new or updated IT-related regulations, processes, software, or technologies have been deployed.

Management of Facilities Operations (30%)
  • Oversee the management of CNR facilities operations. Serve as the primary point of contact with the Facilities Division and other campus units for minor and major renovation projects, capital projects associated with CNR, space planning, tracking metrics, and implementing the university's Physical Master Plan.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of building security policies, procedures, and emergency response plans in consultation with the College Safety Officer. May need to liaise with campus security authorities and first responders, as directed by the College Safety Officer.
  • Provide effective, collaborative, and forward-looking guidance and consultation to department heads and other unit leads regarding their immediate and longer-term space and facilities needs and challenges.
  • Ensure that the CNR faculty, staff, and students are regularly informed of issues and updates related to facilities operations, particularly when they could be impacted by disruptions.

Team and Resource Management (20%)
  • Direct, manage, and supervise the CNR facilities and IT support team (full-time, part-time, and student interns), ensuring and regularly evaluating their rapid, efficient, and effective service delivery.
  • Manage all operating expenses budgets in a fiscally responsible manner relating to CNR IT, CNR facilities, and ETF IT expenditures.
  • Manage CNR IT and facilities projects with a responsible resource mindset, ensuring they are completed on time, within scope, and on/under budget. Identify and implement process improvements and documentation to enhance service delivery and efficiency.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master's degree and at least two years of relevant experience OR
  • Bachelor's degree with at least four years of relevant experience OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience.

One to two years of supervisory experience required.

Other Required Qualifications
  • In-depth understanding of IT systems, architectures, and emerging technologies.
  • Experience with successfully managing multiple, on-going and complex technical projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and manage technology and facilities staff.
  • Demonstrated ability with analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to be fiscally responsible.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate with various groups and work collaboratively with departments and other CNR units.
  • Demonstrated ability to be resourceful and to successfully advocate for the various needs of the college.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with a wide range of audiences, both written and spoken.
  • Regularly keeps up to date with the latest trends with technologies in higher education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • At least five years experience with Windows client management technologies such as Active Directory, Group Policy, SCCM, Powershell, and Server Administration.
  • Experience with ServiceNow ITSM or similar product.
  • Experience with G-Suite or Office 365 cloud productivity platforms.
  • Familiarity with configuration management systems.
  • Understanding of core networking and security principles.
  • Experience in a heterogeneous environment consisting of Windows, Linux, and Mac systems.
  • Evidence of substantive continuing education and training in position-relevant areas.
  • Experience leading a technology and/or facilities group in higher education.
