Position Summary:

We are currently seeking a motivated Junior Structural Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team. You'll support innovative planning, engineering, and design for water-infrastructure projects - including dams, locks, waterfront structures, ports, pump stations, hydropower, flood-risk reduction, and fish passage facilities. In this role you'll work alongside national industry leaders and local experts on technically challenging, high-visibility projects. You'll contribute to structural design and analysis, develop construction documents, and help solve practical engineering problems - all while gaining hands-on experience and expanding your technical skills.

Essential Job Functions:

The following duties are essential to this role. Reasonable accommodation will be madeto enable individuals with disabilities to perform these functions.

  • Perform structural design and analysis for civil works and waterfront projects, including flood walls, navigation locks, dam structures, hydraulic gates, pump stations, and related components.

  • Prepare clear, complete engineering calculations and design documentation using accepted engineering formulas and methods; organize calculation packages for senior review.

  • Conduct quality control checks of calculations, drawings, and quantity takeoffs; coordinate and implement corrections identified during QA/QC.

  • Research and evaluate design options, prepare concise technical summaries, and present findings and recommendations to senior engineers.

  • Solve problems using a combination of industry design standards and modified standard procedures or methods developed in prior assignments.

  • Read, interpret, and develop plans, reports and other contract documents; verify project requirements and constraints.

  • Assist in the preparation of specification language and input for technical sections; provide supporting information for specification development.

  • Review shop drawings and respond to Requests for Information (RFIs) during construction, preparing well documented recommendations for Project or Senior Engineers.

  • Contact and coordinate with other departments to research appropriate courses of action.

  • Coordinate with other disciplines (geotechnical, electrical, mechanical, environmental) and internal teams to resolve design interfaces and ensure interdisciplinary integration.

  • Communicate effectively with project teams, clients, contractors, and subconsultants; escalate technical issues to senior staff as appropriate.

  • Support field activities as needed-attend site visits, shop fabrication visits, etc.

  • Continuously develop technical skills and stay up to date on industry changes and trends-learn new software, codes, analysis techniques, etc.-and share lessons learned with the team.

Requirements Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in civil engineering or structural engineering.

  • A minimum of 1 year of structural engineering experience (industry internships count toward experience).

  • An Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.

  • Working understanding of structural design methods, relevant codes, and standards (AISC, ACI, IBC, ASCE7, etc.).

  • Proven experience with reinforced concrete and structural steel design and detailing.

  • Proven experience producing structural drawings and details.

  • Proficiency with structural analysis software (examples: SAP2000, RISA, LPILE, GROUP); ability to learn new tools quickly.

  • Familiarity with or strong interest in learning various BIM/CAD platforms (AutoCAD, Revit, Bentley OpenBuildings, MicroStation).

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); experience using spreadsheets for calculations and report preparation.

  • Strong analytical, written, and verbal communication skills; ability to present technical ideas clearly to teammates and clients.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively on multidisciplinary teams, take direction, and manage multiple tasks to meet deadlines.

  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality, with an eagerness to learn and grow professionally.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in structural engineering or related field.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or working towards obtaining licensure.

  • Experience with USACE or other federal/local government clients and contracting processes is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to travel for site visits and shop fabrication visits as needed. Travel is estimated to be up to 5% yearly (occasional overnight travel).

  • Ability to stand or walk for long periods during site visits, including the ability to kneel, crouch, or stoop.

  • Ability to walk up stairs and climb ladders.

  • Ability to work outdoors in a range of weather conditions (heat, rain, wind, cold) for extended periods.

  • Ability to sit at a workstation and use a computer for extended periods of time (up to 8 hours/day). Additional hours may be required based on project needs.

  • Manual dexterity to use a computer mouse, keyboard, and other tools.

  • Visual acuity to read and interpret detailed drawings and technical documents.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in-person and via electronic means.

Additional Information

  • This position is based in our Bellevue, WA office on a hybrid schedule, typically in the office 3-5 days/week.

  • This position is scheduled for full-time work (40 hours/week) with a typical schedule of 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday. Additional hours may be required based on project needs.

The salary range for this position is $81,000-$98,000. Compensation may vary and offers will be determined based on a combination of an individual's experience, skill set, certifications, and educational background.
