Location: Newport Beach, California (Onsite)
Length: 1-year contract
Role Overview
We are seeking a skilled Backup Administrator with strong Veeam experience to join an Infrastructure Platform Engineering team. This role is responsible for the day-to-day administration, monitoring, and continuous improvement of an enterprise backup and recovery environment. The Backup Administrator will ensure that backups are secure, reliable, and recoverable, with an emphasis on immutable, object-storage-based data protection that supports business continuity, disaster recovery, and ransomware-resilience objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer, monitor, and maintain the enterprise Veeam Backup & Replication environment, including backup jobs, replication jobs, repositories, proxies, and supporting components.
- Configure and manage object storage targets (e.g., S3-compatible, Azure Blob) and scale-out backup repositories for capacity, tiering, and long-term retention.
- Implement and maintain immutability and hardened repository configurations to protect backup data against accidental deletion, corruption, and ransomware.
- Develop, maintain, and optimize backup policies, schedules, retention rules, and replication strategies aligned with defined recovery point (RPO) and recovery time (RTO) objectives.
- Monitor daily backup and replication operations, promptly investigate and remediate failures, and ensure backup success rates meet established service levels.
- Perform and validate file-level, application-level, virtual machine, and full-system restores, including periodic recovery testing.
- Protect virtual, physical, and cloud workloads across VMware, Nutanix, Windows, and Linux platforms.
- Support disaster recovery and business continuity activities, including offsite replication, DR testing, and cyber-recovery readiness.
- Manage backup capacity planning, storage utilization, and growth forecasting for both on-premises and object-storage repositories.
- Apply security best practices to the backup environment, including encryption, least-privilege access, and network segmentation.
- Lead backup platform upgrades, migrations, and enhancement initiatives, and provide technical guidance on complex data-protection designs.
- Automate routine administrative, reporting, and health-check tasks using PowerShell or the Veeam API.
- Generate and maintain backup reporting, dashboards, and metrics for backup success, recovery readiness, capacity, and compliance evidence.
- Maintain accurate documentation, runbooks, and standard operating procedures for the backup environment.
- Participate in an On-Call rotation and provide after-hours support for critical backup, recovery, and maintenance activities as required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in backup administration, data protection, or infrastructure operations.
- Strong hands-on experience administering Veeam Backup & Replication in an enterprise environment.
- Familiarity with object storage technologies (S3-compatible, Azure Blob) as backup targets.
- Practical knowledge of backup immutability and hardened repositories for ransomware protection.
- Experience protecting workloads across VMware, Nutanix, Windows Server, and Linux platforms.
- Working knowledge of disaster recovery, business continuity, RPO/RTO concepts, and restore validation.
- Experience with backup encryption, secure access controls, and data-protection security best practices.
- Experience with PowerShell or scripting to automate routine backup administration and reporting tasks.
- Strong troubleshooting, organizational, and documentation skills.
- Ability to work independently, lead technical efforts, and collaborate effectively with teams, vendors, and managed service providers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Veeam Certified Engineer (VMCE) certification.
- Experience with Veeam upgrades, appliance-based deployments, and migrations from legacy backup platforms.
- Experience with cloud data protection, immutable cloud object storage, and cyber-recovery solutions.
- Experience with monitoring and reporting tools such as Grafana or Splunk.
- Knowledge of security frameworks, CIS benchmarks, and audit requirements.
