Job Title: Tool Designer III - Machining, Sheet Metal, and Tool Design

Location: Waterloo, Iowa 50703

Employment Type: Contract (1+ Year)

Shift: 1st Shift | 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM

Position Summary:

We are seeking a Tool Designer III with strong experience in machining, sheet metal, and tool design to support manufacturing-driven design initiatives. This role requires a hands-on, detail-oriented designer who can take ownership of designs from concept through build and tryout, while collaborating closely with shop-floor personnel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Technical Design Excellence


Create accurate 3D models and complete 2D drawing packages ready for manufacturing.

Apply a strong understanding of materials and common manufacturing processes in all designs.

  • Manufacturing-First Design Approach


Design tools and components with machining, assembly, serviceability, and adjustability in mind.

Apply appropriate tolerances to ensure robustness without unnecessary over-design.

Consider cost, lead time, and shop capabilities early in the design process.

  • Attention to Detail & Documentation


Produce clear, concise, and complete drawings that minimize clarification requests from manufacturing.

Adhere consistently to drafting standards, documentation practices, and company procedures.

Maintain accurate revision control and communicate design changes clearly.

  • Communication & Collaboration


Communicate design intent effectively through drawings, documentation, and discussions.

Collaborate with machinists, welders, inspectors, engineers, and other stakeholders.

Incorporate feedback from shop-floor personnel to continuously improve designs.

  • Problem Solving & Engineering Judgment


Take a practical, solution-oriented approach to design challenges.

Respond effectively to changing requirements and constraints.

Balance simplicity, functionality, and performance in all designs.

  • Ownership & Professional Conduct


Take responsibility for designs through concept, build, tryout, and refinement.

Follow through on corrections, improvements, and lessons learned.

Demonstrate a mindset of continuous improvement and professional accountability.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience with Creo or similar solid modeling software.
  • Working knowledge of fabrication and manufacturing methods.
  • Engineering background (degree or equivalent practical experience).


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Programming experience (C++, Python, SQL)
  • Project Management experience
  • Supply Management/Purchasing experience
