Summary

Location: Tempe, AZ Salary: $60.00 USD Hourly - $70.00 USD Hourly Description: Title: BSA- Business Systems Analyst
Location: Tempe, AZ

Remote: No

Contact: Brian Merin; ;

Our Technology department is scaling with the company, and the Data & Analytics team owns the platform the rest of the business runs on: the pipelines, models, and reporting that turn shop-level activity into decisions.

We're looking for a Senior Business Systems Analyst who is comfortable being handed a question before anyone has defined it. This role sits between the business and the data platform. You'll partner with Operations, Finance, Marketing, Supply Chain, and HR to figure out what problem needs solving, translate it into a data model and a metric definition that will hold up, and then stay with it until someone is making a different decision because of it.

This is not a ticket-taking role. Requests will arrive as symptoms - "the numbers look wrong," "we need a dashboard for this," "why is that shop down" - and you'll be the one who turns them into a defined problem, a trustworthy answer, and a durable asset. If you need a fully written requirements doc to start, this isn't the seat. If you're energized by walking into a dark room and turning the lights on, it is.

What "Darkness to Light" Means in This Role

We're being explicit about this because it's the core of the job:

Ambiguous intake: You will regularly receive a request with no defined scope, no agreed metric, and no clear owner. Your first deliverable is usually clarity, not a query.

Conflicting definitions: Two departments will define the same metric differently and both will be sure they're right. You'll drive to a single definition and get it documented.

Undocumented sources: Some upstream systems are partner-owned and imperfectly documented. You'll profile the data yourself rather than wait for a spec. You will also document process and systems and how they map to the individual data elements.

You own the "so what": Delivering a correct number is table stakes. The job isn't done until the business knows what to do with it.

Key Result Areas (KRAs)

Problem Definition & Discovery

Requirements Elicitation: Run discovery with business partners to convert vague asks into defined problem statements, decisions to be supported, and success criteria

Deliver process to systems to data mapping for different initiatives

Metric Governance: Define, document, and socialize metric and dimension definitions (comp sales, transactions, ticket, labor, waste, throughput) so one number means one thing company-wide

Prioritization: Assess requests for business impact, effort, and reuse; recommend what gets built, what gets consolidated, and what gets declined

Ambiguity Resolution: Independently drive open questions to closure across departments without waiting for direction

Data Product & Semantic Layer Partnership

Source-to-Target Definition: Partner with data engineering to specify source-to-target mappings, business logic, and transformation rules across the medallion architecture

Semantic Modeling: Contribute to semantic models and metric layers so self-service and AI-assisted analytics return correct answers, not plausible ones

Design Review: Validate that models built at day / store / SKU grain actually answer the business question at the grain the business asks it

Documentation: Maintain data dictionaries, lineage notes, and definition catalogs as first-class deliverables

Data Quality & Source System Advocacy

Profiling & Validation: Independently profile new and existing datasets to find gaps, breaks in grain, duplicates, and silent failures before stakeholders do

Root Cause Over Patching: Trace issues upstream to the originating system rather than accepting downstream workarounds that mask the real defect

Partner & Vendor Engagement: Represent Dutch Bros data requirements in working sessions with source-system and partner engineering teams; maintain and drive issue lists to resolution

Reconciliation: Own reconciliation between source systems and the reporting layer, and explain variances in business terms

Analytics Delivery & Enablement

Analysis: Perform hands-on analysis in SQL to answer business questions directly, not just route them to someone else

Report & Dashboard Design: Design reporting tied to decisions and outcomes rather than activity metrics; retire what isn't used

Adoption: Train and enable business users, including on AI-assisted and conversational analytics capabilities as we roll them out

Storytelling: Present findings to senior stakeholders with a clear recommendation and a stated confidence level

Test Cases: Prepare test cases working with engineers for the feature. Execute end user reports, extracts for performance and reliability.

Ways of Working

Agile Delivery: Work in iterative cycles - write clear stories and acceptance criteria, demo early, and adjust based on feedback

Cross-Functional Partnership: Build durable relationships across Technology and the business so problems reach you early rather than after they escalate

Continuous Improvement: Identify recurring manual work and drive it toward automation or self-service

Standard Setting: Define and evolve how the team handles intake, documentation, and definition governance - then hold the standard

Job Qualifications

Required

7+ years in a Business Systems Analyst role supporting enterprise data and analytics technology organizations

Hands-on SQL fluency - you write and troubleshoot your own queries against a cloud data warehouse (Snowflake strongly preferred); joins, window functions, and CTEs are everyday tools, not something you look up

Demonstrated experience taking undefined, ambiguous business problems through to delivered analytics solutions

Working knowledge of dimensional modeling and data warehouse concepts (facts, dimensions, grain, slowly changing dimensions)

Proven ability to elicit requirements from non-technical stakeholders and translate them into technical specifications

Strong written communication - you document decisions and definitions so they survive turnover

Track record of operating with minimal direction - setting your own priorities, defining your own scope, and being accountable for the outcome

A true "Get It Done" mindset: self-directed, comfortable without a playbook, and driven to remove obstacles

Handson experience with JIRA

Business Process Modelling experience

Bachelor's degree in a quantitative, business, or information systems field, or equivalent practical experience

Strongly Preferred

Retail, restaurant, QSR, or multi-unit operations data experience (day / store / SKU grain, comp sales methodology, calendar vs. fiscal alignment)

Familiarity with cloud data platforms- enough to hold a credible design conversation with engineers

Exposure to POS, labor, supply chain, or loyalty source systems and their common data quality failure modes

Experience working alongside third-party vendor engineering teams

Hands-on experience using AI tools such as Claude and Cursor to accelerate analysis and create, apply, and maintain reusable skills

Skills

Structured problem decomposition and critical thinking

Requirements elicitation and stakeholder management

Data profiling and quality analysis

SQL and BI development

Business acumen - connects data to P&L and shop-level operations

Excellent communicator across technical and non-technical audiences

Highly organized and detail-oriented

Curious; actively evaluates new systems and technologies

Comfortable with ambiguity and shifting priorities

Medical, dental, and vision insurance are available to qualified candidates who meet eligibility requirements.
