Role Overview
We are seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to provide technical leadership and architectural direction for our backend services. This role involves translating product requirements into technical plans, mentoring engineers, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure successful delivery. The ideal candidate will own the architecture of backend services and drive standards for quality and operational readiness.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the technical direction and architecture of the team's backend services.
- Translate ambiguous product requirements into clear, well-scoped technical plans.
- Author and review Architecture Decision Records (ADRs).
- Identify and proactively address systemic technical debt.
- Establish and uphold standards for code quality, testing, and operational readiness.
- Design and build scalable backend services using .NET (C#) and/or Node.js/TypeScript.
- Architect workloads for Kubernetes, including resource management, health checks, and scaling strategies.
- Make informed architectural decisions across AWS and Azure environments.
- Design and implement edge compute solutions using Cloudflare Workers and related services.
- Partner with Platform Engineering and SRE on deployment pipelines, observability, and reliability.
- Mentor engineers through code reviews, pairing, and technical coaching.
- Lead knowledge-sharing sessions on architecture and best practices.
- Collaborate closely with Product Management on discovery, refinement, and delivery planning.
Required Qualifications
Experience: 8+ years of backend software engineering experience.
Technical Skills:- Expert-level proficiency in .NET (C#) and/or Node.js/TypeScript.
- Production experience with Kubernetes.
- Working knowledge of AWS and/or Azure.
- Production experience with Cloudflare Workers and edge services.
- Understanding of distributed systems and API design.
- Advanced proficiency with AI-assisted development tools.
Abilities:- Proven ability to lead complex technical initiatives without formal authority.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with messaging systems and event-driven architectures.
- Familiarity with SQL and NoSQL data stores.
- Knowledge of FinOps, multi-cluster Kubernetes, or service mesh architectures.
- Prior experience in a staff-level or technical lead role within a product company.
