FinOps Engineer (Cloud Cost Optimization & Financial Engineering)

We are not accepting C2C or 1099 arrangements.

Location: Chandler, AZ (primary) or Irving, TX
Work Model: Hybrid (3 days onsite)
Duration: 12 months (conversion to FTE expected)
About the Role

We are looking for a highly experienced FinOps Engineer to lead cloud financial management and cost optimization across a large-scale technology environment. This role combines software engineering, cloud infrastructure, and financial accountability to drive efficiency, transparency, and intelligent spend management.

You will partner with Engineering, Architecture, Finance, and executive stakeholders to embed cost awareness into the software development lifecycle and operational processes. This is a hands-on, impact-driven role responsible for establishing and scaling FinOps capabilities from the ground up.
What You'll Do
  • Lead the design and implementation of FinOps practices across cloud and on-prem infrastructure
  • Build and scale cost visibility frameworks, including tagging, allocation, and chargeback models
  • Identify and execute cost optimization opportunities (e.g., rightsizing, reservations, storage lifecycle improvements, architecture efficiencies)
  • Develop budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis models to support financial planning
  • Implement automation solutions for cost monitoring, anomaly detection, alerting, and remediation
  • Leverage AI-assisted insights to identify inefficiencies and recommend proactive cost actions
  • Integrate cost controls into engineering workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and architecture reviews
  • Create dashboards and executive-level reporting to communicate insights and trends
  • Collaborate closely with Finance and senior leadership to align technology spend with business goals
  • Influence engineering teams to treat cost as a first-class design and operational requirement
Minimum Qualifications
  • 6-10+ years of experience in cloud, infrastructure, or platform engineering
  • Hands-on expertise with Azure and Google Cloud Platform cost management, billing models, and optimization strategies
  • Experience managing hybrid or on-prem infrastructure costs
  • Proven FinOps experience delivering:
    • Application-level cost visibility, allocation, and chargeback
    • Optimization strategies (rightsizing, reservations, architectural improvements)
    • Budgeting, forecasting, and anomaly detection
    • Measurable cost savings and efficiency gains
  • Strong engineering and automation skills:
    • Scripting (Python, PowerShell, Bash, or similar)
    • Building automated guardrails, alerts, and remediation workflows
  • Experience with AI-driven cost analysis and automation (e.g., anomaly detection, insight generation)
  • Experience implementing tagging, governance, and cost allocation standards at scale
  • Ability to integrate cost considerations into engineering and operational processes
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate technical cost drivers into business impact
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience operating FinOps in large-scale or multi-cloud environments
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes or container cost optimization
  • Experience incorporating cost as a non-functional requirement (NFR) in architecture reviews
  • Exposure to third-party FinOps or cloud cost management tools
  • FinOps Foundation certification or equivalent practical expertise
Key Characteristics
  • Deep FinOps expertise with a bias for action and ownership
  • Strong infrastructure and cloud engineering background
  • Ability to operate in a greenfield FinOps environment and build capabilities from scratch
  • Excellent executive communication and presentation skills
  • Comfortable working across technical and financial domains
Additional Details
  • Focus on infrastructure cost optimization, usage patterns, and capacity planning
  • Heavy emphasis on automation, reporting, and proactive cost management
  • Collaboration with CTO organization, infrastructure teams, and finance partners
  • Expected use of AI/GenAI tools to enhance FinOps workflows (not model development)
