The Lead Engineer - Grid Modernization is a senior technical leader responsible for designing, implementing, integrating, and optimizing advanced grid technologies that enable a more flexible, resilient, and decarbonized electric system. This role serves as a subject matter expert in Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS), Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), real-time operations technology, and modern grid control systems-driving strategy, architecture, and engineering execution across cross-functional teams.
The Lead Engineer will guide technical direction for the DERMS platform, support operational readiness, ensure system reliability, and partner closely with System Operations, IT, OT, and vendor stakeholders to deliver cutting edge capabilities aligned with the company's Grid Modernization roadmap.
Key Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership & Architecture
  • Lead the engineering design, configuration, and lifecycle management of the GridOS DERMS and associated grid modernization technologies.
  • Develop end-to-end architecture for DER integration, including telemetry, forecasting, control strategies, interoperability, and system security.
  • Oversee engineering studies related to DER impacts, flexible interconnections using dispatch limiting schedules, real-time operational constraints, and feeder-level flexibility.
  • Define and maintain technical standards, engineering practices, and solution governance.

DERMS Implementation & Integration
  • Serve as the technical lead for the DERMS deployments, upgrades, and feature enhancements.
  • Coordinate DERMS integration with ADMS, SCADA, EMS, GIS, OMS, MDMS, AMI, and enterprise data platforms.
  • Partner with IT/OT cybersecurity teams to ensure compliance with NERC CIP and internal security requirements.
  • Validate system functionality through use-case design, testing, and operational simulations.

Operational Support & Reliability Engineering
  • Collaborate with System Operations to ensure DERMS tools and workflows support real-time situational awareness and dispatch.
  • Support FERC Order 2222 operational integration with DERMS.
  • Lead troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and system optimization for DERMS and related grid technologies.
  • Develop guidelines for DER visibility, control hierarchies, and operator decision support tools.
  • Support outage restoration processes where DER interactions impact reliability.

Stakeholder Engagement & Program Delivery
  • Act as the engineering interface with vendors, consultants, regulatory bodies, and internal stakeholders.
  • Translate operational needs into technical requirements and system design.
  • Contribute to regulatory filings, pilots, grant proposals, and technical reports.
  • Provide mentorship and technical coaching to engineering teams and project staff.

Data, Analytics & Forecasting
  • Support analytics for DER forecasting, load modeling, and flexibility assessment.
  • Work with data engineering teams to design telemetry and data quality strategies.
  • Evaluate and deploy analytics tools for grid optimization, DER impact evaluation, and real-time decision support.

Qualifications:

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or related field.
  • 7-10+ years of experience in utility operations, power systems engineering, or grid modernization.
  • Strong technical expertise in DER integration, grid control systems, or ADMS/EMS/SCADA platforms.
  • Experience with DERMS platforms, distributed generation, microgrids, energy storage, and inverter-based resources.
  • Familiarity with industry standards (IEEE 1547, IEEE 1815.2 (DNP3), IEEE 2030.5, OpenADR).
  • Demonstrated leadership in complex, multi-discipline technical projects.

Preferred
  • Master's degree in engineering or technology discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience with NERC CIP, reliability standards, and utility regulatory frameworks.
  • Knowledge of utility OT networks, cybersecurity principles, and cloud-hosted grid applications.
  • Experience working with ISO/RTO markets, DER aggregators, or virtual power plant (VPP) technologies.

Working Conditions:
  • Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.
  • Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
  • Work is performed primarily in an office environment which requires sitting, standing, walking and climbing stairs are involved. Job can require traveling to operating districts and companies within and outside the state.
  • The position may require occasional travel by car to other . A valid driver's license is required.
