Responsibilities

Job Purpose

The Director, IT PMO, is responsible for building and leading Pattern Energy's IT Program Management Office, while also providing close support to the SVP & CTO on executive-level reporting and follow-through on key organizational decisions. This role provides a single point of accountability for how IT investments are prioritized, resourced, and delivered, and ensures the CTO's portfolio story is always board- and leadership-ready. This is a foundational hire in a newly established technology organization scaling toward 70+ headcount and will play a central role in shaping PMO discipline, governance rhythm, and cross-functional execution from the ground up across the four technology pillars: NERC CIP/Cybersecurity, Enterprise Applications (Oracle, Allegro), Data/AI & Integration, and Infrastructure & Cloud.

Key Accountabilities
  • IT PMO Leadership and Governance: Establish and lead the IT Program Management Office, including intake, prioritization, and stage-gate governance across the technology portfolio. Define and implement PMO methodology and standards (hybrid Agile/waterfall as appropriate, given compliance-driven stage-gate requirements).
  • Team Leadership and Resource Capacity Planning: Manage and develop a team of Program Managers, each owning a program lane: NERC CIP/Cybersecurity, Enterprise Applications (Oracle, Allegro), Data/AI & Integration, and Infrastructure & Cloud. Build portfolio-level resource capacity planning to align program demand with team bandwidth.
  • Executive Portfolio Reporting: Own executive-level portfolio reporting: status, risk, budget roll-up, and steering committee materials. Select and implement PPM tooling appropriate to portfolio scale and complexity.
  • Vendor Management: Own IT vendor management practices, including contract oversight, performance tracking, and renewal/negotiation support across the technology portfolio.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Partner with Enterprise Excellence to align on portfolio prioritization frameworks and drive delivery of cross-functional process improvement initiatives touching IT systems.
  • Budget Planning and Tracking: Manage IT budget planning and tracking across programs, including forecasting, variance reporting, and alignment with finance/CTO priorities.
  • Board and Leadership Presentation Support: Prepare board- and leadership-level presentation materials, translating portfolio status, risk, and strategy into clear executive narrative.
  • Follow-Through and Accountability: Track and drive follow-through on action items and decisions from CTO staff meetings and steering committees, ensuring commitments are closed out and visible to the SVP & CTO.
  • Sounding Board and Advisory Support: Serve as a sounding board on organizational and portfolio decisions, providing counsel to the SVP & CTO on strategy, prioritization, and cross-portfolio trade-offs.

Qualifications

Experience/Qualifications/Education Required
  • Formal Education: A bachelor's degree in a relevant field (business, information technology, engineering, or a related discipline) is preferred; equivalent professional experience will be considered.
  • Work Experience: 10+ years of progressive experience in IT program/portfolio management, with demonstrated experience building or scaling a PMO function. Power/energy industry experience required (utilities, IPPs, renewables, or other regulated environments).
  • Qualifications: Strong executive presentation and board-level communication skills required. Vendor and budget management experience required, including contract oversight, performance tracking, and renewal/negotiation support. Experience managing or overseeing Data/AI initiatives or programs is a plus, as is familiarity with NERC CIP or other critical infrastructure compliance frameworks; neither is mandatory. PMP, PgMP, or an equivalent certification is preferred.
  • Domain expertise: Experience and knowledge of the power/energy industry landscape (utilities, IPPs, renewables, or related regulated environments). Deep experience standing up program governance, stage-gate methodology, and PPM tooling within a technology organization is required.
  • Communication and planning: Strong communication skills and confidence translating portfolio status, risk, and strategy into clear, board- and leadership-ready narrative. History of collaborative engagement with technical and functional leaders across program lanes, with a strong understanding of cross-portfolio dependencies. Effective problem solver with an emphasis on defining robust action plans and the ability to pivot when priorities shift. Must be a strong facilitator with great interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset, comfortable serving as a sounding board on organizational and portfolio decisions. Ability to work independently, manage and develop a team of Program Managers, and partner across the organization with colleagues at any level in a fast-paced environment.

The expected starting pay range for this role is $137,000.00 - $186,000.00 USD.
