Summary

Overview

GovCIO is currently hiring a Microsoft RDS and Windows Engineer for our program with the US Coast Guard. This position is located in the Kearneysville, WV area and will be a hybrid position.

Responsibilities

The Microsoft RDS and Windows Engineer will be responsible for designing, implementing, and managing Microsoft Remote Desktop Services (RDS) environments to ensure optimal performance, security, and scalability of our remote access solutions. A key requirement within this role will be proven experience in upgrading and migrating RDS infrastructure from Windows Server 2012 to Windows Server 2019. Other responsibilities include:
  • Design, architect, implement, and maintain a highly available and scalable Microsoft RDS infrastructure.
  • Lead and execute the migration and upgrade of our existing Windows RDS environment from Windows Server 2012 to Windows Server 2019.
  • Manage all components of the RDS environment, including RD Connection Broker, RD Gateway, RD Web Access, and RD Session Host.
  • Configure and manage high availability for RDS roles to ensure seamless user connectivity.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues related to the RDS environment, including connectivity, performance, and application delivery.
  • Administer and support the underlying Windows Server infrastructure, including Active Directory, Group Policy (GPO), DNS, and DHCP.
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts using PowerShell to streamline administrative tasks and deployments.
  • Implement and manage security best practices for the RDS and Windows Server environment, including patching, hardening, and certificate management.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Collaborate with other IT teams to ensure the successful integration of the RDS infrastructure with other systems and applications.
  • Provide Level 3 technical support and serve as a subject matter expert for all things related to RDS.


Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field with 5-8 years (or commensurate experience)

Required Skills and Experience
  • 3-5 years of direct experience with Microsoft Remote Desktop Services.
  • Proven, hands-on experience upgrading RDS environments from Windows Server 2012 to Windows Server 2019.
  • Strong experience in Windows Server administration (2012, 2016, 2019).
  • Proficiency in managing Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, and other core Windows services.
  • Experience with virtualization technologies, such as VMware vSphere or Microsoft Hyper-V.
  • Strong scripting skills, particularly with PowerShell, for automation and management.
  • Experience sequencing, publishing, and maintaining App-V applications as remote applications.
  • Ability to obtain and hold a Secret level clearance.
  • Willingness to work in a hybrid capacity (1-3 days onsite a week).
  • Currently possess a Network+ (equivalent also acceptable) or higher certification.

Clearance Required: Must be clearable up to active Secret Clearance

Preferred Skills and Experience


  • Past experience working with the United States Coast Guard and/or past DOD experience.
  • Relevant Microsoft certifications, such as MCSE: Core Infrastructure, MCSA: Windows Server 2016/2019/2022, or Azure-related certifications.
  • Possess a Security+ Certification (or equivalent).
  • Experience working directly with government leadership or senior military officials.
  • Background in systems engineering or software development is a plus.
  • Display interpersonal skills, problem-solving skills, and time management skills.
  • Experience with cloud platforms, particularly Microsoft Azure, and Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD).
  • Familiarity with load balancing and network infrastructure concepts.
  • Experience with monitoring and performance tuning of RDS and Windows Server environments.

Posted Pay Range

The posted pay range, if referenced, reflects the range expected for this position at the commencement of employment, however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, education, experience, and internal equity. The total compensation package for this position may also include other compensation elements, to be discussed during the hiring process.
