WHO WE ARE LOOKING FORSlate is looking for a highly skilled and experienced
Diagnostic Service Engineer to join the Slate Service Engineering team. This role will execute the complete Slate service diagnostic repair solution, including definition of service diagnostic requirements to Engineering, authoring of service diagnostic tool content, and ECU service flash support development utilizing internal and third-party resources to support the Slate service vision with a focus on ease of serviceability and DIY.
Reporting to the Service Engineering Manager, the Diagnostic Service Engineer will work closely with Slate Engineering, Manufacturing, and Digital teams as well as external suppliers to ensure service diagnostic robustness and accuracy. The candidate should have excellent project management skills in addition to extensive diagnostic knowledge and experience.
WHAT YOU GET TO DO- Engage with the Slate Electrical Engineering team and the ECU supplier base to gain a complete understanding of the vehicle electrical architecture, ECU diagnostic protocols, diagnostic source package requirements, and ECU software capabilities.
- Execute Slate's comprehensive service scan tool development solution, aligning with company deliverable milestones.
- Identify additional make / buy opportunities to support the service diagnostic development plan.
- Support aftermarket diagnostic requirements aligning with Right-to-Repair legislation.
- Define scan tool diagnostic content definition by ECU to aid in vehicle diagnosis and ensure diagnostic scan tool support adherence and accuracy.
- Work closely with Engineering and ECU suppliers to define software requirements for service (on-board routines, I/O control, DID read/writes, etc.).
- Support OTA and connected service flash solutions with defined service requirements and testing.
- Test and validate on-vehicle diagnostic support functionality, addressing software, calibration and implementation issues, driving issues to closure.
- Ensure quality performance targets are met while working within the allocated budget.
- Engage with multiple departments, including Service, Engineering, Manufacturing, Training, Brand/Marketing, to ensure success.
- Work cross-functionally with the Slate digital team to translate technician and customer needs into precise diagnostic requirements that drive effective, user-centered solutions.
WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TEAM- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Automotive Technology, or related degree from an accredited university. Master's degree is a plus.
- 10+ years of automotive OEM or transportation industry experience developing diagnostic requirements and solutions.
- Working knowledge of vehicle communication network systems (CAN, LIN, Ethernet, etc.) and diagnostic communication protocols (UDS) and requirements.
- Awareness of CARB and OBD regulations.
- EV diagnostic experience and knowledge of the ecosystem(s).
- Deep understanding and demonstrated knowledge of diagnostic scan tool and content development processes.
- Knowledgeable on industry CAN and Diagnostic tools.
- Experience with reading and interpretation of vehicle data communication logs.
- Experience managing supplier resources and associated budgets and budget forecasting.
- Experience with third party service provider evaluation and selection including RFI, RFQ, and supplier agreements.
- Experience with metric reporting, First Time Right (FTR) and On-Time Delivery (OTD).
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS- Must have the ability to travel (up to 10%).
- Must have the ability to lift and carry up to 35 pounds.
- Must have the ability to stand, walk, and perform repetitive tasks for extended periods.
