Summary

Job Description:

Our Team: The Agentic Commerce is building innovative and reliable solutions that directly support Chewy's mission to be the most trusted and convenient destination for pet parents and partners everywhere. We take the time to understand the "why" before shaping the "how." We celebrate engineering successes and foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement. We set a high bar for delivering production-ready code by embracing CI/CD (Continuous Integration & Continuous Deployment) and DevOps best practices. Our engineers are encouraged to contribute ideas and solutions across tech stacks throughout the company.

Your Opportunity: As a Software Development Manager (SDM) on the Agentic Commerce team, you will lead a team of talented engineers to build and maintain scalable, high-performance software solutions that power Chewy's agentic commerce experiences. You will collaborate closely with product owners, technical program managers, designers, and cross-functional partner teams to deliver seamless and reliable customer experiences. As the leader of a dynamic and high-impact team, this role offers a tremendous opportunity for professional growth within the leading online pet retailer in the US.

What You'll Do: Lead and develop a high-performing team of 3-8 software engineers responsible for designing, building, and maintaining features across agentic commerce platforms. Build a high-impact team by hiring top talent aligned with team goals and business needs. Partner closely with Product, UX, and cross-functional stakeholders to shape roadmaps, translate requirements into scalable technical solutions, define execution strategies, overcome technical challenges, and drive timely delivery. Oversee all phases of the software development lifecycle, including planning, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and maintenance, while providing technical guidance to the team and stakeholders throughout each stage. Provide regular updates to stakeholders and leadership on project status, risks, timelines, and resource needs. Establish, drive, and continuously improve processes that enable reliable, high-quality software delivery and operational excellence. Define and drive technical vision, standards, and best practices while fostering a culture of continuous learning and engineering excellence. Guide the team in automating infrastructure provisioning using Terraform and Git-based workflows to deploy scalable, containerized applications. Champion infrastructure-ascode best practices across the team. Ensure the reliability, scalability, and performance of the agentic commerce tech stack through observability, proactive monitoring, and resolution of performance bottlenecks in high-throughput, customer-facing environments.

What You'll Need: Demonstrated experience leading and delivering multiple significant software development projects. 3+ years of experience in a technical leadership capacity, with a proven ability to mentor engineers, guide execution, and successfully deliver technical initiatives. 3+ years of experience in software development as a software engineer or architect (this role requires strong knowledge of both backend systems and frontend applications). Proven experience delivering software using Agile/Scrum methodologies. Prior hands-on experience designing, building, and deploying scalable, highly available systems. Strong communication skills with both technical and business audiences. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science (or a related field) or equivalent practical experience. Position may require travel.

Bonus: Experience in e-commerce, particularly high-volume transactional systems. Experience delivering projects using Continuous Integration / Continuous Deployment practices. Strong experience within the Java ecosystem, preferably Spring WebFlux / Spring Bootbased applications. Experience with modern frontend frameworks, preferably ReactJS. Experience with cloud and orchestration technologies (AWS services, Terraform, Kubernetes). Exposure to AI-assisted application development, including integrating backend services with large language model (LLM) platforms such as OpenAI APIs. Familiarity with model context protocols (MCP) or similar frameworks used to manage and route contextual data for AI-powered workflows.

The base salary range for this role is $149,000 - $225,000.00.
  • The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate's relevant experience, education, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for 401k and a new hire and annual equity grant. C08+ positions may also be eligible for annual bonus.

We offer different types of insurance and benefits, such as medical/Rx, vision, dental, life, disability, hospital indemnity, critical illness, and accident. We offer parental leave, family services benefits, backup dependent care, flexible spending accounts, telemedicine, pet adoption reimbursement, employee assistance program, and many discounts including 10% off pet insurance and 20% off at Chewy.com.

Exempt salary team members have unlimited PTO, subject to manager approval. Team members will receive six paid holidays per year. Team members may be eligible for paid sick and family leave in compliance with applicable state and local regulations.
