Role Overview
As a Materials and Failure Analysis Engineer, you will be responsible for conducting technical lab work that supports prototype materials development and failure analysis investigations. You will manage a queue of analysis support requests to drive design and manufacturing improvements for hardware, including high-power servers, networking hardware, and AI/GPU systems. This role is lab-focused and requires enthusiasm for hands-on work and developing lab procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Handle assigned failure analysis tickets, covering materials characterization and failure analysis workflows for 1-10 samples per investigation.
- Develop and execute Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for sample preparation and physical/chemical characterization.
- Provide technical support to senior engineering staff.
- Conduct optical inspection, measurements, and imaging.
- Perform electrical fault isolation using basic inspection and probing techniques (DMM).
- Utilize 2D and computed tomography (CT) X-ray inspection methods.
- Execute physical cross-sectioning and associated sample preparation.
- Conduct materials testing, including mechanical and thermal-mechanical tests.
Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
Experience: 3+ years of related work experience, including failure analysis methodology to determine root-cause diagnosis. Junior candidates with strong fundamentals are encouraged to apply, as mentorship is available.
Technical Skills: Experience with advanced materials and failure analysis techniques such as optical microscopy, SEM/EDS, FTIR, 2D/CT X-ray, and 3D surface profiling. Proficiency in performing bulk materials or electronics cross-sections with associated physical/chemical measurements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Engineering with 5+ years of experience as a Materials, Surface, or Electrical Engineer.
- Experience writing detailed lab reports.
- Experience with consumer electronic devices.
- Familiarity with thermal-mechanical analysis tools and other material characterization techniques.
Compensation & Benefits
The pay rate for this position is between $65.00 and $80.00 per hour. A comprehensive benefits package is available to eligible employees.
