Description of Work

Posting is for two Engineering Specialist I positions that will serve as Lead Project Inspectors in the Asheboro Resident Engineer's Office. Position Nos. 0628 will be filled from this posting, you only need to apply once to be considered for both positions. The Engineering Specialist I position supports higher level Engineers in the administration of large complex highway construction projects. Duties include conducting independent moderate to complex inspections, sampling and testing of materials, and analysis of engineering related data to ensure conformance to specifications and contractual provisions; supervise and assist in training lower-level technicians, including Department employees as well as Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI) staff; and assign daily project inspection duties to lower-level technicians. Additional duties include monitoring contractor progress to ensure timely completion of the projects, monitoring contractor compliance with subcontractors and DBE and Title VI Compliance, resolving daily constructability issues on projects, and highway construction surveying and layout.

Additional expectations include working independently to make engineering decisions and adapting to changes in technology. Good communications skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, contractor's personnel, and the public. Employee may be exposed to hazards including construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and heights over water or traffic and will be expected to work outside in varying temperature and weather conditions. Employee will be expected to perform moderate physical activity such as walking, climbing, kneeling, and standing. Must be able to lift 50lbs. Employee may need to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes are required.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC13 $50,088 - $87,654

Management prefers applicants with the following:
  • Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems
  • Computer experience including office software and drafting software
  • Knowledge of mathematical functions (such as algebra, geometry, and trigonometry)
  • Experience reading and interpreting construction plans, contract provisions, specifications, and procedures
  • Experience in taking notes, collecting field data and preparing routine reports

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate's degree in an applicable area of engineering technology from an appropriately accredited institution and six years of progressive technician experience; or High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and eight years of progressive technician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
