Job Details

The Refinery Technician operates a computerized control system on one or more refinery systems, including the Hydrolyzer, Fractionator, O/S, Stills, Evaporation Trains and Glycerin Refinery, to safely produce quality fatty acids to customer specification. Most of the shift is spent in the control room monitoring levels and screens, with periodic rounds on the floor for visual and physical equipment checks, valve adjustments and light hands on work. When equipment goes down, the Technician identifies the issue and communicates it to maintenance and the shift leader.

This position reports to a Refinery Operations Supervisor. The schedule is a two week rotating pattern of 12 hour shifts, for example Week 1: Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday from 5:00 to 5:00 for 48 hours, and Week 2: Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday for 36 hours. New hires train on days, and there is a strong likelihood of placement on nights following training.

Responsibilities

Start up the process by turning valves, moving handles, working overhead and observing display screens to bring product into specification
Use computerized control systems and manual valves to control process and production
Enter laboratory results and observations in Quality Window, and production and end of shift data in SAP
Perform emergency equipment shutdowns and recognize when one is necessary
Complete assigned safety inspections, mitigating or reporting hazards to management
Perform visual and physical inspections of machinery and equipment twice per shift
Report defects to maintenance and the shift leader promptly and enter work orders into the electronic maintenance tracking system
Draw product samples and run tests for Iodine Value, Color, pH and others, including Gas Chromatograph testing
Conduct shift turnover with the relief operator in the control room
Participate in maintenance activities during shutdowns and repairs, including inspection, installation and repairs
Perform Lockout Tagout and isolation of systems as required
Perform cleanup of the assigned area using shovels, mix T's and other tools
Assist in training other employees and support company principles of Safety, Compliance, Quality, Cost and KPIs
Perform other duties as requested or required

Qualifications

Two or more years of industrial manufacturing experience, such as refinery, chemical processing, piping or pumping systems, dairy processing or brewing
No license or formal education required
Comfortable monitoring systems in a control room for extended periods while staying alert to changes
Willing to work on the plant floor, including overhead work, valve operation and basic hand tool use
Steady, level headed approach to equipment issues and process upsets
Experience with SAP or Quality Window is a plus
Able to work a rotating two week schedule of 12 hour shifts, including nights and weekends
