Overview

The Design for Test (DFT) / Test Engineer is responsible for developing and implementing tests and test strategies for semiconductor capital equipment systems and subsystems to ensure tool performance, reliability, and manufacturability. This role supports Veeco-type process tools by integrating testability into equipment design, developing factory and field test solutions, and enabling efficient qualification, manufacturing, and customer acceptance of complex semiconductor equipment.

Key Responsibilities

Test Development & Execution
  • Develop and maintain factory test procedures including subsystem tests, system integration tests, and final system verification.
  • Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and customer qualification requirements.
  • Design and validate test fixtures, simulators, scripts, and data collection methods.
  • Define performance verification tests for process repeatability, stability, and uptime metrics.
  • Support new product introduction (NPI) by enabling early hardware bring-up and debug.

Manufacturing, Field & Customer Support
  • Support manufacturing teams with production test execution, troubleshooting, and yield improvement.
  • Participate in root cause analysis of test failures and field issues in collaboration with quality, reliability, and service teams.
  • Support field issues related to tool performance, calibration, or diagnostics.
  • Drive improvements to reduce test time, cost, and rework.
  • Support documentation required for ISO 9001 and customer audits.

Design for Test & Equipment Testability
  • Partner with mechanical, electrical, software, and systems engineering to incorporate testability into capital equipment designs.
  • Define test requirements and access points at the system, module, and subassembly levels.
  • Support testability of process modules, motion systems, thermal controls, and sensors.
  • Review schematics, BOMs, and system architectures to ensure efficient diagnostic and serviceability capabilities.
  • Support built-in diagnostics, health monitoring, and self-test features for equipment subsystems.

Data Analysis & Continuous Improvement
  • Analyze test and performance data to identify trends, systemic failures, and improvement opportunities.
  • Support reliability, qualification, and stress testing initiatives.
  • Drive improvements to test coverage, robustness, and manufacturability.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience developing and building complex mechanical or electromechanical products; or a Master's degree with no experience. Experience with specific types of builds, such as aerospace hardware, automotive systems, or precision assemblies, should be highlighted.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience testing complex capital equipment or industrial systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and system specifications.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across hardware, software, and system interfaces.
  • "Get-it-done" mindset with a strong sense of ownership and urgency, able to drive tasks to completion in fast-paced manufacturing environments.
  • Strong system-level thinking and attention to detail, ensuring quality, precision, and accuracy throughout the build and test process.
  • Excellent problem-solving and root cause analysis skills, with a proactive and innovative approach to troubleshooting complex production and technical challenges.
  • Clear and effective communicator, able to convey complex technical information to both technical and non-technical, customer-facing audiences.
  • Team-first mindset, working effectively with cross-functional teams in fast-paced, hardware-focused development and manufacturing environments .
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, balancing hands-on testing with documentation, analysis, and effective management of time, resources, and competing projects.
  • Familiarity with RF, motion control, thermal systems and plumbing systems preferred.
  • Experience supporting customer acceptance testing and field installations preferred.
  • Knowledge of reliability testing, GR&R, and SPC methods desired.
  • Experience working in NPI and sustaining engineering environments desired.
  • Ability to interpret OEM documentation and setup equipment for testing preferred.
