About the Role
Seeking a highly experienced DOCSIS Expert to support the design, development, and qualification of nextgeneration cable modems and gateways (CPE) for the North American broadband market. This senior subjectmatter expert will guide both hardware and embedded software decisions, lead DOCSIS feature implementation, support customer engagements, and ensure products meet performance, reliability, and certification requirements.
This role is central to shaping our DOCSIS roadmap and delivering highquality broadband devices to major MSO customers.
Key Responsibilities
Product Architecture & Design
- Advise on chipset/SoC selection for DOCSIS 3.1 and DOCSIS 4.0ready CPE.
- Review hardware architecture and embedded software design for DOCSIS compliance.
- Translate customer requirements into clear technical specifications and design plans.
DOCSIS Provisioning & Standards
- Guide provisioning flows including DHCP, TFTP, TOD, TLVs, certificates, and PKI.
- Ensure secure firmware upgrade processes (signed images, secure boot, etc.).
- Support standards alignment and roadmap planning for DOCSIS evolution.
Testing, Qualification & Troubleshooting
- Build and execute test plans in a DOCSIS lab environment.
- Validate performance, stability, and interoperability with CMTS/RPD/RMD systems.
- Diagnose field and lab issues using Wireshark/tcpdump, CM logs, SNMP, and debugging tools.
- Work with chipset vendors and internal teams to reproduce and resolve defects.
Customer & Vendor Collaboration
- Engage with North American MSO customers during product definition and qualification.
- Provide technical leadership in discussions with chipset/SoC vendors.
- Deliver clear documentation, test reports, and troubleshooting guidance.
Knowledge Sharing & Lab Leadership
- Maintain DOCSIS lab capabilities and documentation.
- Mentor engineers and contribute to internal knowledge bases.
Required Skills & Experience
DOCSIS Expertise
- Deep handson experience with DOCSIS 3.0, 3.1, and ideally DOCSIS 4.0.
- Strong understanding of provisioning, security, TLVs, and registration flows.
- Proven experience designing or qualifying DOCSIS CPE products.
Embedded Software & Networking
- Background in embedded Linux and C programming.
- Familiarity with firmware architecture and debugging.
- Solid networking fundamentals: IPv4/IPv6, NAT, DNS, DHCP, HTTP/HTTPS, SNMP.
Hardware & System Knowledge
- Experience with SoC selection, board design considerations, and system performance tuning.
Troubleshooting Tools
- Wireshark, tcpdump, SNMP tools, gdb, strace, CM logs.
Nice-to-Have Skills
- PacketCable / SIP voice
- TR069 / TR181 / USP
- CMTS, RPD, RMD experience
- DPoE or OMCI familiarity
- SCTE certifications
