Job Description
The State of Texas is seeking an experienced VB/C++ Legacy Systems Analyst to support legacy application analysis, business rule extraction, and modernization initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess strong expertise in analyzing and reverse-engineering complex Visual Basic (VB6/VB.NET) and C++ applications while translating embedded business logic into structured documentation.
The Data Analyst VI performs advanced analytical and business analysis work involving interpretation, validation, and documentation of complex business rules embedded within legacy systems supporting agency operations, compliance, reporting, and modernization projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Independently analyze complex legacy Visual Basic (VB6/VB.NET) and C++ codebases
Reverse-engineer business logic, workflows, calculations, and data transformations
Extract and document business rules into structured, business-readable formats
Develop and maintain standardized business rule inventories
Collaborate with business and technical stakeholders for validation and refinement
Identify inconsistencies, gaps, and duplications within legacy system logic
Serve as liaison between technical teams and business users
Support modernization and migration initiatives by separating business logic from legacy applications
Required Skills:
Strong hands-on experience with Visual Basic (VB6 and/or VB.NET)
Strong experience with C++ development and analysis
Proven expertise in reverse-engineering legacy applications
Experience extracting and documenting business rules
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
Working knowledge of SQL and data-driven systems
Experience with legacy system modernization or migration projects
Background in business analysis or systems analysis
Experience working with education data preferred
VB and C++ certifications preferred
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in:
Data Science
Business Analytics
Computer Science
Computer Information Systems
Management Information Systems
Minimum 2+ years of experience working as a Data Analyst and Modeler in:
Data Warehouse
Data Lake
Operational Data Store
Similar enterprise environments
Master’s degree may substitute for two years of required work experience
