The Role: SAP BusinessObjects (BOBJ) Consultant

Location: St. Louis, MO Hybrid, must be in office on Mondays and Thursdays

Hours: 37.5 hours/week

What You ll Do:

We are seeking an experienced SAP BusinessObjects (BOBJ) consultant to lead and substantially perform the upgrade of the SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform and SAP Data Services environment from version 4.3 to SAP BusinessObjects BI 2025. The consultant will assess the current environment, develop the upgrade strategy, execute the migration, validate all reporting and ETL processes, and ensure a successful production deployment with minimal business disruption. The consultant will work closely with infrastructure, database, SAP Basis, security, and business reporting teams throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

Assessment and Planning

  • Assess the current BusinessObjects environment.
  • Inventory reports, universes, publications, schedules, users, security, and Data Services jobs.
  • Identify deprecated or unsupported features in BI 2025.
  • Evaluate hardware, operating system, database, Java, and browser compatibility.
  • Develop an upgrade roadmap, project plan, rollback strategy, and risk assessment.

Installation and Upgrade

  • Perform low-impact, low-risk cleanup of existing Production environment such as removing inactive users, Universes that are non-functioning (e.g. target database is not available), reports that depend on non-functioning universes, etc.
  • Implement a BO 4.3 staging environments for and migrate from current 4.3 production environment.
  • Upgrade UNV to UNX, repoint reports, and test.
  • Install and configure SAP BusinessObjects BI 2025 on new Window Server 2025 VMs.
  • Work with MS SQL DBA to prepare SQL 2022 database server.
  • Upgrade Central Management Server (CMS) repositories and File Repository Servers (FRS).
  • Upgrade or migrate SAP Data Services repositories and Job Servers.
  • Configure clustering, Adaptive Processing Servers, Web Intelligence Processing Servers, and monitoring.
  • Configure Tomcat, web applications, SSL certificates, and authentication.

Content Migration

  • Validate migration of:
    • Web Intelligence reports
    • Crystal Reports
    • Universes (UNX/IDT), first migrate required UNV to UNX.
    • Publications
    • Connections
    • Security groups
    • Scheduled jobs
    • Auditing database
  • Resolve compatibility issues with legacy reports and universes.
  • Ensure repository consistency after migration.

SAP Data Services

  • Upgrade Designer, Job Server, Repository Manager, and Management Console.
  • Validate ETL jobs, workflows, data quality transforms, and scheduling.
  • Test repository migration.
  • Optimize job performance where appropriate.

Security and Authentication

  • Configure Active Directory, LDAP, SAML, or enterprise authentication.
  • Validate user permissions and security inheritance.
  • Test Single Sign-On (SSO) functionality if implemented.

Testing

  • Develop upgrade validation checklists.
  • Execute:
    • Functional testing
    • Regression testing
    • Performance testing
    • User Acceptance Testing (UAT)
  • Resolve defects and document fixes.

Performance Optimization

  • Tune CMS database performance.
  • Optimize APS sizing.
  • Review Job Server configurations.
  • Improve report performance.
  • Optimize server memory allocation and processing.

Documentation

Produce comprehensive documentation including:

  • Upgrade architecture
  • Installation procedures
  • Configuration documentation
  • Knowledge transfer materials

Production Cutover

  • Develop cutover plan.
  • Execute production migration.
  • Provide post-go-live support.
  • Monitor system health and resolve production issues.

Preferred Qualifications

  • SAP Certified Technology Associate
  • SAP BusinessObjects Platform Administration certification
  • SAP Data Services certification
  • Experience with SAP Analytics Cloud integration
  • Experience migrating large enterprise BI environments (1,000+ users)
  • Cloud or hybrid SAP BI architecture experience

    • Windows Server and Windows SQL server
  • Collaborate with VMware server teams in proper sizing and performance
  • Experience upgrading SAP Data Services repositories

Key Success Criteria

  • Successful upgrade to SAP BusinessObjects BI 2025 with minimal downtime.
  • Successful migration and validation of all BusinessObjects content and Data Services jobs.
  • No critical production defects after go-live.
  • Performance equal to or better than the existing environment.
  • Complete documentation and knowledge transfer to client administrators.
