Summary

Responsibilities

At H-E-B Digital, technology powers one of the most complex and sophisticated supply chains in retail. We're looking for an experienced Manager of Software Engineering to lead teams responsible for Store Order Management, a critical function that serves as the connection point between store demand, warehouses, transportation, and store fulfillment.

This team plays a vital role in ensuring the right products get to the right stores at the right time. From translating store demand into warehouse and transportation workflows to supporting the systems that move inventory across our network, the Store Order Management team sits at the heart of H-E-B's supply chain operations.

This organization was originally created to modernize and retire a legendary legacy platform, but today the team owns much more, including integration services and the technology that enables seamless coordination across multiple supply chain systems.

As the Engineering Manager, you'll lead talented engineers, partner with stakeholders across Supply Chain and Digital, remove roadblocks, and help drive the next generation of solutions that support one of Texas' largest and most innovative retailers.

What You'll Do

Build and Grow High-Performing Teams
  • Manage and support two engineering squads within the Store Order Management organization.
  • Lead teams consisting of approximately 3-4 H-E-B Partners and 3-4 contractors/vendors per squad.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop engineers through regular feedback, career planning, and growth opportunities.
  • Foster a culture of ownership, collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Remove obstacles that prevent teams from moving quickly and delivering value.
  • Support hiring, onboarding, performance management, promotions, and talent development initiatives.

Drive Technical Excellence
  • Partner closely with Product, Supply Chain, and Engineering stakeholders to prioritize work and deliver business value.
  • Lead the successful execution of initiatives across multiple systems and integrations.
  • Champion engineering best practices, code quality, system reliability, and operational excellence.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions impacting multiple products, platforms, or teams.
  • Provide leadership during complex technical investigations and critical issue resolution.
  • Advocate for modern engineering standards, tools, and processes that improve team effectiveness.

Influence Across the Supply Chain Ecosystem
  • Collaborate with leaders across warehousing, transportation, store operations, and Digital Technology.
  • Facilitate alignment across multiple teams and stakeholder groups as well as managing relationships with Product Managers.
  • Translate business challenges into actionable technical solutions.
  • Communicate priorities, risks, recommendations, and progress to leadership and cross-functional partners.
  • Champion solutions that improve efficiency, resilience, and operational excellence throughout the supply chain.

Support Technical Excellence
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to teams working within a modern software ecosystem.
  • Influence application architecture, integration patterns, reliability, and performance improvements.
  • Support design reviews, code quality initiatives, and engineering best practices.
  • Help troubleshoot and resolve complex production challenges impacting critical supply chain operations.

What Success Looks Like

In this role, you'll:
  • Build engaged, high-performing engineering teams.
  • Deliver meaningful technology solutions that improve customer and Partner experiences.
  • Create clear technical direction and execution plans.
  • Develop future engineering leaders.
  • Drive continuous improvement in software quality, scalability, reliability, and delivery effectiveness.

Qualifications

Experience
  • Significant experience leading software engineering teams in a modern technology environment.
  • Proven success managing engineers, technical initiatives, and complex cross-functional projects.
  • Experience developing talent through coaching, mentoring, and performance management.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance technical excellence with business outcomes.

Technical Leadership
  • Experience with modern software development practices and distributed systems.
  • Strong understanding of backend services, integration architecture, and scalable system design.
  • Familiarity with Java-based applications and modern web technologies such as Angular, Node.js, and JavaScript.
  • Ability to balance technical priorities with business objectives.

Leadership Skills
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to inspire, motivate, and align teams around shared goals.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a strategic and systems-thinking mindset.
  • Experience leading through change and navigating complex organizational challenges.
  • Passion for building inclusive, collaborative, and high-performing cultures.

Education
    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Leadership development experience and/or demonstrated success leading engineering teams preferred.
