OverviewApex Systems is seeking a
Senior ComSec Specialist to support Communications Security (ComSec), enterprise key management, and advanced cryptographic modernization initiatives for a highly visible DoD customer at the Pentagon. This role is suited for a proactive, strategic thinker with deep experience in secure communications, cryptographic technologies, and ComSec operations.
The ideal candidate can operate confidently in a fast-paced environment, provide thought leadership, and translate complex technical concepts into clear policy, guidance, and senior-leader briefings.
Key Responsibilities- Lead cryptographic modernization efforts across DoD programs, ensuring alignment with evolving NSA/CNSA requirements.
- Develop, review, and implement ComSec and key management policies, SOPs, and technical documentation.
- Advise senior leadership on cryptographic risk, modernization strategy, and enterprise-level ComSec initiatives.
- Review system architectures to ensure compliance with national security cryptographic standards.
- Analyze current ComSec processes and propose innovative improvements to optimize security, efficiency, and mission readiness.
- Conduct key management planning, accountability reviews, and lifecycle analysis of cryptographic equipment.
- Provide technical guidance on emerging cryptographic technologies, algorithms, and device fielding schedules.
- Prepare and deliver clear, high-quality briefings to O-6/C-suite level stakeholders.
- Mentor junior team members and serve as a senior technical resource for ComSec/crypto issues.
Required Qualifications- 12+ years of cybersecurity experience with a master's degree, OR
- 14+ years with a bachelor's degree, OR
- 18+ years with no degree.
- Demonstrated experience in communications security, cryptographic device management, and key management infrastructures.
- Strong understanding of NSA policies, CNSS guidance, and secure communications protocols.
- Proven ability to draft and refine policies, position papers, white papers, and technical documentation.
- Demonstrated initiative and proactive work style-must be able to identify needs and propose solutions without prompting.
- Experience interacting with senior military or government leadership.
- Active TS/SCI clearance.
Preferred Qualifications- Prior military experience in ComSec, crypto, signal, or cyber operations.
- Experience supporting cryptographic modernization programs or enterprise key management systems (EKMS/KMI/ACCM).
- Familiarity with cryptographic key distribution systems, tactical and strategic communication systems, and modernization timelines.
- Ability to conduct strategic risk assessments in emerging cryptographic landscapes (e.g., post-quantum considerations).
