Onsite in Cincinnati, OH

The organization seeks a hands-on Kafka Platform Engineer to support and scale an enterprise event-driven architecture on Amazon MSK within AWS. The role owns Kafka infrastructure, automation, and operational excellence across a hybrid cloud ecosystem. The engineer will implement Terraform-based IaC, integrate CI/CD, and ensure security, governance, and observability for production workloads.

Rate: $60.00 to $70.00/hr. w2

Responsibilities:
  • Operate and support Amazon MSK in production.
  • Design and manage multi-AZ and multi-region Kafka architectures for high availability.
  • Define topic design, partitioning strategy, retention tuning, and capacity planning.
  • Troubleshoot consumer lag, rebalancing, broker performance, and throughput bottlenecks.
  • Manage Schema Registry and enforce schema governance.
  • Deploy and manage Kafka Connect clusters.
  • Configure and troubleshoot source and sink connectors.
  • Support real-time integrations into Snowflake and other enterprise systems.
  • Build and maintain Terraform modules for MSK, networking, IAM, security groups, and supporting AWS services.
  • Manage Terraform lifecycle meta-arguments, state, modules, and remote backends.
  • Automate environment provisioning across dev, test, and prod.
  • Implement CI/CD pipeline integration for infrastructure and Kafka deployments.
  • Establish monitoring and observability using CloudWatch, Prometheus, Dynatrace, or similar.
  • Implement Kafka ACLs, IAM integration, encryption, and secrets management.
  • Operate within regulated enterprise environments.

Experience Requirements:
  • Hands-on production ownership of Amazon MSK and Kafka operations.
  • Experience designing high availability Kafka across multi-AZ and multi-region architectures.
  • Proficiency with topic design, partitioning, retention, and capacity planning.
  • Expertise troubleshooting consumer lag, rebalancing, broker performance, and throughput.
  • Experience managing Schema Registry and schema governance.
  • Experience deploying and managing Kafka Connect clusters and connectors.
  • Proficiency integrating Kafka with Snowflake and enterprise systems.
  • Advanced Terraform skills including modules, lifecycle meta-arguments, state management, and remote backends.
  • Experience automating environment provisioning across multiple environments.
  • Strong understanding of AWS networking including VPCs, subnets, security groups, and IAM.
  • Experience supporting production workloads in AWS.
  • CI/CD pipeline integration for infrastructure and Kafka deployments.
  • Monitoring and observability using CloudWatch, Prometheus, Dynatrace, or similar.
  • Security and governance experience including Kafka ACLs, IAM integration, encryption, and secrets management.
  • Experience working in regulated enterprise environments.
  • Not a fit: application developers limited to producing/consuming messages without platform ownership.
  • Not a fit: pure DevOps experience without deep Kafka expertise.
  • Not a fit: theoretical knowledge without production ownership.
