Senior Systems Engineer - Remote

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Kforce has a client that is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer. This is a remote contract role with preference towards candidates that are located in Austin, TX.

Summary:
We are seeking a senior, hands-on Systems Engineer to help clean up and modernize a legacy Windows environment, with a strong emphasis on Active Directory and Group Policy. The ideal candidate can step into a real-world, imperfect environment, assess what's there, and improve it without causing disruption.

Key Responsibilities:
Active Directory & Group Policy Cleanup:
Analyze the existing Active Directory environment, with a specific focus on:
* Group Policy structure
* Configuration sprawl
* Inconsistencies or outdated GPOs

* Identify opportunities to simplify, standardize, and harden AD configurations
* Improve AD hygiene and reduce long-term administrative risk

Legacy Infrastructure Upgrades:
* Support upgrades of legacy Windows servers and systems
* Improve reliability and maintainability of older environments without breaking dependent services
* Plan and execute upgrades carefully in production environments

Core Windows Systems Support:
Maintain and support:
* Windows Server environments
* Active Directory and authentication services
* Certificates/Certificate Authority (PKI)
* IIS/web server infrastructure

* Ensure foundational systems remain stable, secure, and well-maintained

Independent Analysis & Execution:
* Evaluate existing configurations and recommend improvements
* Execute changes with minimal oversight and thoughtful risk management
* Document findings, improvements, and changes where appropriate

REQUIREMENTS:
* Strong hands-on experience with Windows Server environments

Active Directory expertise, especially:
Group Policy analysis and cleanup (explicit priority):
* Experience managing certificates/PKI
* Experience supporting IIS/Windows-based web infrastructure
* Proven experience upgrading or modernizing legacy systems
* Comfortable operating independently in existing, imperfect environments

Preferred/Nice-to-Have:
* Led or owned AD cleanup or restructuring efforts
* Experience standardizing environments that grew organically
* Strong troubleshooting skills in older or under-documented systems
* Ability to explain why changes were made, not just what was changed

The pay range is the lowest to highest compensation we reasonably in good faith believe we would pay at posting for this role. We may ultimately pay more or less than this range. Employee pay is based on factors like relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, location, performance, union contract and business needs. This range may be modified in the future.

We offer comprehensive benefits including medical/dental/vision insurance, HSA, FSA, 401(k), and life, disability & ADD insurance to eligible employees. Salaried personnel receive paid time off. Hourly employees are not eligible for paid time off unless required by law. Hourly employees on a Service Contract Act project are eligible for paid sick leave.
