Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced Application Developer / Business Systems Analyst to modernize an existing Excel-based business calculation tool into a user-friendly, accurate, adaptable, and robust application. The ideal candidate will have expert-level Microsoft Excel skills, strong analytical capabilities, and experience evaluating, adapting, or modernizing business applications and spreadsheet-based solutions.
The successful candidate will assess the existing Excel solution, evaluate alternative application platforms, recommend the most appropriate technology, and help adapt and validate the final solution while preserving the existing calculation logic and business rules.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze an existing Excel-based calculation tool, including formulas, business rules, inputs, outputs, validations, and dependencies.
- Develop a clear understanding of the existing calculation methodology and functionality.
- Evaluate Excel and other commercially available application platforms against business and technical requirements.
- Develop a selection/decision matrix comparing potential solutions based on usability, accessibility, automation, adaptability, robustness, and maintainability.
- Recommend the most appropriate application or platform and provide supporting justification.
- Adapt or convert the existing calculator into the selected format.
- Preserve existing formulas, calculation logic, and business rules throughout the modernization process.
- Implement automated calculations while minimizing manual data entry and user error.
- Develop intuitive data-entry workflows, validation rules, and clear error messaging.
- Evaluate the solution's accessibility across commonly used computers, tablets, and other applicable devices.
- Protect internal formulas and business logic from unauthorized modification.
- Design the solution so authorized business users can make appropriate future updates with minimal technical assistance.
- Conduct functional, UAT, and beta testing using representative business scenarios and sample data.
- Validate the new solution against the existing Excel model to ensure accurate and consistent results.
- Troubleshoot calculation discrepancies, defects, validation issues, and other functional problems.
- Collaborate closely with business stakeholders and subject-matter experts to clarify requirements and validate functionality.
- Prepare technical and functional documentation, including application functionality, calculation logic, testing results, and user instructions.
- Participate in stakeholder meetings, demonstrations, reviews, and presentations.
Required Qualifications
- Expert-level Microsoft Excel experience, including complex formulas and calculation models.
- Experience analyzing and modernizing Excel-based business tools or processes.
- Experience with application development, business applications, low-code/no-code platforms, or web-based solutions.
- Strong understanding of business requirements and ability to translate business rules into application functionality.
- Experience with data validation, automated calculations, error handling, and controlled user input.
- Experience with functional testing, UAT, beta testing, and test scenario development.
- Experience evaluating or comparing application platforms and technology solutions.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
- Experience developing user-friendly interfaces and workflows.
- Ability to create clear technical and functional documentation.
- Strong communication and stakeholder collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Microsoft Power Apps or similar low-code platforms.
- Experience with web-based application solutions.
- Experience converting spreadsheet-based tools into business applications.
- Experience working with business-critical calculation tools or rule-driven applications.
- Experience working directly with business users or subject-matter experts during application modernization projects.

The ideal candidate is an Excel expert with application analysis/development experience who can understand an existing calculation model, evaluate alternative technologies, recommend an appropriate solution, preserve the underlying business logic, and deliver a tested and user-friendly application.
