Role Overview
The Project Manager is responsible for leading advanced technical, financial, and regulatory planning for utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects from early development through construction readiness. This role requires the application of advanced engineering, economic, and project-management principles to optimize project scope, risk allocation, and financial feasibility across complex, multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects. Upon project turnover for field execution, the Project Manager will be responsible for all aspects of projects that can range from 200 million to 1.5 billion dollars.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead advanced pre-construction planning and optimization for utility-scale BESS projects, integrating engineering design, financial modeling, procurement strategy, and regulatory constraints.
- Manage coordination of highly matrixed project development teams to ensure resources are focused on meeting project schedules.
- Coordinate with environmental, regulatory, land acquisition, and interconnection teams to ensure comprehensive project development.
- Develop and optimize the project's technical scope and variables to improve technical and financial feasibility.
- Support origination and development teams with PPA and GIA negotiations, as well as jurisdictional requirements.
- Coordinate engineering, estimating, and procurement needs to support the development of financial models and project designs.
- Competitively source, negotiate, and execute commercial contracts for critical services, including engineering and EPC/PC construction services.
- Actively communicate and interface with executive leadership, suppliers, regulatory agencies, and local communities.
- Present project progress and risk mitigation strategies in meetings with various levels of management.
- Ensure a seamless handover of projects to the Construction Project Manager with an executable construction plan.
Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, or a related field.
Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in project management. Utility-scale experience is required. A focus on engineering, economics, or construction is preferred. Experience with renewables, ideally BESS or Solar, is required.
Technical Skills: Advanced Excel skills are required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
- Six Sigma experience.
- Technical experience with renewable energy projects, particularly electricity markets.
